Instructions for replacing 1Tb HDD with Samsung EVO 1Tb SSD in XPS 15

Can anyone recommend a set of instructions for replacing the factory fitted 1Tb HDD with a 1Tb SSD in an XPS 15 (9530, late 2013 model)?  I thought it might be a simple case of cloning the HDD to the SSD and swapping the drives, but when I did that I got an error message on Boot saying that I needed to do a Repair - I didn't note down the exact error, but it was asking for the Windows installation discs.

I don't really want to do a new Windows install from scratch unless absolutely necessary.

Many thanks in anticipation!

Hi Paulemm,

You should use the Dell Backup and Recovery utility to prepare a set of recovery discs. Those can then be used to load the OS onto the new drive. That is the best approach.

Hi Osprey4,

Success! I actually did this in stages:

1) created a system Recovery drive on a usb stick (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/create-usb-recovery-drive)

2) backed up my hdd (creating a system image) onto a spare external hdd using Windows File History

3) swapped the hdd with the new ssd

4) booted into bios (F12) and changed the option to boot from usb

5) with usb and external hdd connected, booted from the usb and restored from the system image

6) voila!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
