Large Drive Support

I have a Dimension 5150 purchased mid year 2006.  I have upgraded the Bios to A07.

I am attempting to add a 500 gig hard drive to the Sata second connector.  I've enabled >137gb support in XP and the BIOS says it sees the second drive.

However, when I boot, the system says there is no bootable drive in the system.  If I remove the drive, the system boots just fine.  Is there a way to enable support for this drive in the BIOS?

Thanks!

Did you enter the setup [BIOS] and check that the drive is set to auto [on]?

In order for windows to recognize the second hard drive, it must be patitioned and formatted.

These are generic instructions for installing an additional hard drive using Windows XP Disk Management, they are by Seagate,
but apply to all brands.

shesagordie,

I would love to be able to get far enough with the drive that I could partition it in XP. :( My problem is, the drive, when attached to the computer, appears to be causing the BIOS to, I can only call it, flake out.

I currently have 2 drives attached to the system now. My goal is to replace drive 2 with a new drive. The drive is a brand new Western Digital WD5000KS SATA.

If I didn't know better, I'd say the BIOS itself had a drive capacity limit.

Thanks for the info though!

Drives have 2 connections. Power and sata.

Some Drives have 3 connections old power molex and sata power.

Attaching power to both connectors PERMANENTLY AND IRREVERSABLY DAMAGES the drive.

Put just the new drive in and see if you can detect it and format it.

SpeedStep,

This drive is a brand new unit. It has only 1 power and 1 data connector.

I've tried putting it in by itself. The BIOS says it detects a 500 gb drive with a link speed of 3.0 mbps.

However, when I tell the machine to go ahead and boot, booting from the CD in this case as the drive is completely empty, I am given an error - F1 to continue, F2 to enter setup.

I've booted from the Western Digital setup CD and attempted to format the drive, but the WD setup software says there is no drive present.

What's frustrating about this whole process is... The bios hides so much of the configuration that I can't attempt to do things like: Choose a slower link to the drive...

The drive itself says it is Serial ATA - not Serial ATA2 or any such thing. So I am at a loss as to what else to try.
