Maximum Hard Drive size for Inspiron 6400?

I'm ready to get a bigger hard drive for my Inspiron 6400.

I think I need a SATA drive, but how big can I go?  I've seen drives over 320GB.

How big is the biggest?

Thanks in advance.

Any size now available will work - note, however, that the Hitachi 500G drives won't fit (they're 12.5 mm high);  if you want a drive that large, go with Samsung, which has 9.5 mm units.

I've been given contradictory advice about this by 3rd party hard disk suppliers. Some say that any capacity SATA drive which will physically fit the space is o.k. Others say that there is a limitation in Dell's BIOS which makes the maximum capacity to around 150Gb--the largest replacement drive Dell themselves offer is only 120Gb-- so that even if a larger drive is installed, it will be limited to this capacity.

Can anyone clarify? Also, are there any implications (power requirement? heat?) in selecting a 7200rpm drive, or in one brand over another?

There's no current size limit.

Each model drive will have its own power requirements - generally, WD's 7200 drives are the most power efficient/coolest running for notebook computers.
