My new 4T hard drive shows as 1.7G on Windows 2008 Server

Hi;

I just added a 4T hard drive to my server. It is a Dell Optiplex 780 running Windows 2008 Server. I set the disk to be GPT when initializing it in Disk Management.

Is there something else I need to do?

thanks - dave

Hi Dave,

Try updating Intel RST.

Hi Osprey;

Ok, I've found the RST drivers on the Dell website. However, the readme in the zip file is telling me to run F6flp64.exe but there are no .exe files in the downloaded zip. How do I install it?

Also there's a pre-O/S driver and an O/S driver - do I need both?

thanks - dave

As you can see from the attached, the Intel software sees the full capacity of the disk. But Windows server does not. I can't use the Intel software to create the volume because it wants a 2T or smaller disk and requires 2+ to create RAID volumes.

I just want a plain old 4T disk that's a standard volume.

Any ideas?

thanks - dave

Hi ejn63;

Ok, that one installed fine. Unfortunately it still tells me 1.7T (1677.90G to be exact). What else do I need to do?

thanks - dave

I suspect you have a hardware limitation here -- you likely will need to install a PCI controller card if you want to use the drive.

See here for WIndows support on 2+ Tbyte drives.

I did use GPT for the partition table. And it's Windows Server 2008. So this should all work fine.

And with the Intel RST software shoing it as a 4T drive, the controller I have clearly is sufficient.

thanks - dave
