Philips DVD8631 - Multiple Problems
I have a Dell 8400 with a Philips DVD8631 and a Samsung CD-R/RW SW-2525.
My Philips DVD will not read or play DVDs anymore or locks up when trying. Also when I turn on or restart my computer the DVD tray ejects all the way or half way. When I insert a DVD and push the button to close it, it will close but then reopen. I have updated the firmware with the CD21 (01/11/05) file on Dell's site.
I have emailed Dell but have not received a response. Should I ask for them to send me a NEC replacement? How hard is it to install myself.
Also, my CD-Burner won't record CD-R disk that already have info. on them when using Sonic. It tells me to insert a new disk. Works fine if I drag and drop.
Thanks for any help!

Hi Scubafrogman,
Some standard steps to try:
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 11, article 2.
Then Section 15, articles 14 & 17 to verify DMA is set correctly.
Also there is a update / patch for Sonic`s software in Dell`s Library, search through Product Support tab / Downloads.
Best Regards
God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do
and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Thanks Pred. for the quick response. I'll have to look into it when I have more time. Your site has a lot of information and is a little overwhelming.
Why would it open the DVD tray for no reason?

Hello scubafrogman.
I just had the same problem today, with the same Dell Dimension 8400 and the same Philips DVD+-RW 8631 Drive. The door stays open (or reopens when trying to close it) and the drive doesn't recognise any disk.
I sent an e-mail to the Tech Support - no response as of now. So if any of us has the solution he should let the other know about ! I will post any reponse I receive from the techs.
No greate fuss about replacing yourself the drive. Its easy (just open the beast, unscrew one screw and dislodge the front panel; that's it).
Stay tuned

meldbg,
I think your right. After reading this forum I see that there has been a lot of problems with this particular product. Hopefully I can get Dell to send me another brand of DVD burner since my Dell 8400 is only a few months old.

jtappolet,
Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone. :) I received a response from Dell but it was an automated message. Here is what it says:
Drive Tray Opens Randomly or Will Not Stay Shut
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update your virus software with the latest definitions from the manufacturer's site, and then perform a full virus scan of your system. Some common viruses cause this behavior as an attempt to keep you from using a program on a CD or DVD to remove them. You can always download free emergency anti-virus software and run it from your hard drive if this is the case. McAfee, Norton Anti-virus, F-Prot and other major vendors all have this service.
Some software can cause this virus-like behavior when it is running in the background. To determine whether this is the case, run Windows in diagnostic startup mode:
* Click [Start] | Run and type this in the Open box:
MSCONFIG [Enter]
* Click the option for Diagnostic Startup | [OK]
* Restart when prompted.
If the drive now behaves normally, try using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to uninstall applications that might be causing the problem.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't think this is the problem as I have the latest Norton update and have scanned for viruses and I talked to a co-worker today that says he had the same problem with a Philips DVD drive.

Scubafrogman,
The answer from Dell you posted is a mere joke !
As you said, this (virus - spyware) is not the problem !
From the second drive, I ran a CD-based version of Linux (Knoppix) : the faulty drive didn't change any of his weird behaviour. I even tried to start the computer on a floppy disk (yes it still exists...) with a DOS 6.3. Same bad reaction from the drive.
I'm therefore 100% sure that the problem lies with the drive itself and not with anything that is on the hard drive (Windows - virus - spyware ...).
I replaced myself the faulty Philips drive with a LiteOn replacement I had from an older computer. Everything is running fine except that the replacement drive - which is one year old - cannot write on double-layered disks.
Stay tuned.

Hear me now!!! The Philips DVD 8631 is garbage. GARBAGE I say!!!
I don't like being blunt like that and put down a manufactures product but in this case (my direct personal experience with the Philips DVD drive) I am and will!
I went through two of them within two weeks of receiving my new 8400 in December 2004. I had my entire PC replaced. The new 8400 came with an NEC ND-3450A 16X DVD-RW. I've burned about 15 DVD's and no problems experienced.
