Problem Reading DVD Drive

I have a Demension E510 running XP Media.  It has 2 CD/DVD drives the 1st is just a cd/dvd reader and reads CD + DVDs just fine.

The second is a HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW  GWA4164b drive.  If I place a DVD in the drive it will flash for a while but then gives up.

The system came with Roxio Dell edition.  Roxio sees the drive and shows me all the supported format types but when I install a DVD - or + (both types show they are supported) it sats there is no mdeia in the drive.

I insert a blank DVD it thinks for a while then come back a says

"Please insert an appendabledata disc and try again"

Is this drive bad or am I missing something????

Thanks

Hello

The best to figure it out would be booting from a bootable media for example an OS cd or drivers cd.

Put the OS media in the computer and then power off the computer.

Keeep tapping the f12 key on the keyboard.

Select the option for the cd/dvd and then push enter, as soon as you see the message press any key to boot from the cd, push enter multiple times.

If it boots from the media then its software issue but if in case it didnot then its a hardware isssue.

Please reply to the post and tell me if it is a software or a hardware issue.

Thanks and regards.
