I have a similar problem. I have a Dimension 9100 and Sonic-similar to Roxio-will work when I double click on the icon. Then other times when I double click on the icon, it won't work. So far I've had to uninstall and reinstall the software twice, and it's getting tiresome. I bought the pc so I could put my data on DVDs. If you find out what is causing your problem, would you please let me know, and visa versa? I'd love to know what is causing this problem.

Hi Nadeve,

Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 13-0, article 32. Do a clean uninstall of Roxio. Reinstall Microsoft Office; reboot the PC.
Next Install Roxio, do not reboot yet, jump over to their site and apply the latest available undate for their software, then reboot the PC. See if this help.
I am currently searching MS site for a possible article on this conflict.

Best Regards!

Hi Robin,

Sonic purchased/merged with Roxio but use both names and tends to be confusing at times.

The clean install for Roxio/Sonic may clear up some of the issues you are having. I had spoke with one of the Modertors at Roxio and they too recommend the clean approach if possible. Since you do have the discs, might be worth a try.

Best Regards!

I don't have a disc for MicroSoft office. It came on the computer but no disc to go with it. And I don't have the full version, I only have what looks like a trial version. I have all the updates to Sonic, but I don't know if it's because it's an older version. Did Sonic merge with Roxio? When I did an uninstall last night, I used Add/Remove programs. Then I did a search for any leftover files. There were tons of files left, but some where shared files. I didn't know what to delete so I didn't delete anything, just what was in the ADD/Remove list. I'm using Sonic v7 and I don't think it's supported anymore. I always liked Nero better but it's so expensive. So far Sonic has worked since reinstalling it, but I bet if I turned off the pc for a while and then turned it on, Sonic wouldn't come up when I click on it.

Actually, I never use office. Because I only have the version that came with Dell, I'm not sure how it even works. I use MS Works for writing letters, etc. It's confusing because it says MS Works, and Office Document, but then it says MS Word. I don't know the difference between Word and Works. They both work the same.

My Sonic disc also came with another program called My DVD, and sometimes I'll get two icons on the screen. These programs are all on one disc.

Hello Jeff,
Last night I did the clean install for Sonic and right now it is working okay. I got rid of everything I could in Add/Remove programs that related to Sonic. Then I did a search for any leftover files. I found a ton of them but since I didn't know what they belonged to, I left them alone. Then I rebooted the pc and reinstalled Sonic. Actually the disc is called DigitalMedia Plus My DVD Plus. So everything is working now. I don't know if Sonic will work after I turn my pc off for the night and turn it back on. It may be fine. And I have all the updates. I don't think updated Sonic/Roxio to version 9 would help if the problem is caused by other software. That is what I don't like about software. Everything interfers with another thing and it's hard tracking down software problems. I can't get it to finalize a disc. I had a DVD R burned and I wanted to make sure nothing got erased. So I clicked on Finalize and got a message telling me to put an appendable DVD R disc in the tray. I already had the DVD R disc in the machine. Otherwise it will burn DVDs. I don't know what appendable means. But at least the disc burned. I'd buy Nero but it's very expensive. I have an earlier version but I'd probably need an upgrade if I went with that instead. I'm always confusing Roxio and Sonic. I guess now they are one in the same, just different packaging. I'm out of the loop as far as software goes. I haven't bought any new stuff in ages. I'm praying Sonic keeps working so I don't have to do a clean install a 3rd time.

Thanks for you help.

Predator,

Right now I'm running Sonic's DigitalMedia Plus v7 and My DVD Plus. At least that is what it says on the disc. I've had this program for 2 years. Would upgrading to the newer version solve the problem? Sometimes I click on the Sonic icon and I never know if the program is going to work or not. Or what about Nero. Would that be a better choice? I still can't figure out why it won't finalize discs. I want to make sure these discs don't get written over. I had a DVD R in the tray, which is what the pc asked for. Any ideas? I had pictures on the disc. Does that make a difference? I was doing a disc to disc copy. One disc was a DVD RW and the other a DVD R. Would that make the difference?

Hi Robin,

Copying from a DVD RW disc to a DVD R does not always work well. I find usually it is best to either copy to the Hard drive, then burn when using differnt media types; or stay with DVD-R to DV-R; DVD+R to DVD+R, etc...
Pictures are simply data, really no different that Word doc, Excel, etc...

I cannot say for sure updating to the Sonics/Roxio latest/greatest would solve all the issues. However you can go ahead and try Nero`s demo version, just do not install their Packet Writing program InCD. This will atleast give you an idea whether it works or if you like the software.
Both Nero and Sonic/Roxio have pretty good clean tools to completely remove their software to give you a clean / fresh start.

Best Regards!

Hi Jeff,
I thought it might be a difference in the discs. Tonight I'll try copying a DVD R to a blank DVD R and see what happens.

I'll keep this version of Sonic/Roxio as long as it keeps working. I don't need the latest version just to copy files. Or save pictures. I used to use Nero all the time, and then when I bought the Dell it came with Roxio/Sonic, and it took me a while to get used to using Sonic.

I did one thing, though, that I shouldn't have. When I updated Sonic, I also updated their DLA packet writing program. Should I go in an remove it from Add/Remove programs or does the entire program have to be deleted and reinstalled again? I do like the drag and drop feature, but I forgot that they can cause problems also because they are poorly written. I wonder if that is what was causing the program to not always work. When I can get Sonic to work, it works fine. But if I double click on it and it doesn't bring the program up, I know it will never work until I do a complete uninstall and reinstall, and that gets tiresome. At least this computer will copy a disc. I couldn't get my 8400 to do anything. Dell swapped out the 8400 for this 9100 about two years ago when the 8400 just stopped working. The only problem I've been having lately is when I turn off the monitor while the pc is on, and then turn the monitor back on later, the monitor doesn't always come back on. Then I have to go in back where the cords are and eventually the monitor works. I don't know if it's the monitor itself or just loose cords. Any thoughts?

Jeff,

Since I've already done two clean installs with Roxio/Sonic and since that hasn't totally solved the problem of the program not always working, can just the DLA program in Add/Remove programs be deleted instead of having to do yet another clean install? It gets tiring after a while. It's getting harder and harder to get all this software to work together, and this is just the software that I've had on the computer for a long time. The only new piece of software I just purchased was Photo Album 6. That seems to be running ok and I had the problem with Sonic long before I bought the new software. It's just that I didn't notice it as much because at the time I wasn't burning many cds. The irritating thing with Sonic is that when it works, it works fine. When it doesn't work, nothing can make it work. I also got this error message, and I have no idea what it means:

IEexplorer.exe: The instruction at 0x7473c7db referenced memory at 0x00000272 could not be read.

Does this sound like a hardware problem or software problem. More and more I'm getting messages saying that the memory could not be read.

I'd do a complete reinstall because I have the instructions now, but if I can avoid going through all that I would like to wait until I have more time. Plus, when I first got this 9100 and most people wanted to do clean installs, I read so many horror stories about getting the blue screen of death.

Sorry to bother you again. Computers can be so frustrating.

Hi Robin,

Yes, please do uninstall Sonic`s DLA and see if this helps.
I will do some checking on that error message. Have you run a Diagnostic on your memory?

Best Regards

Hi Robin,

Here is the link for the Diagnostic on your:
E520

You have 4 options on the type of test, some prefer the Extended, others like the Custom Test. Really depends on how you wish to proceed, time frame, extent, etc...

Best Regards!
