SATA spec for Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop

I have a Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop(intel core i7, 8GB RAM) which I bought in 2009. Now I want to upgrade the Hard drive to SSD. I don't know whether it's compatible or not. Is this laptop SATA 3? Please help.

Hi Yeseng,

All SATA 3 drives are backward compatible to SATA 2 systems, so you should be fine with an SATA 3 SSD. Please keep in mind that many of these SSD drives are 7mm thick, slimmer than the 9.5-mm typical laptop HDD, so sometimes an adapter is needed in order for the drive to connect properly within the drive bay.

Hi osprey4,

Thank you for the reply. Can I use SSD of any size? Because I received a reply from DellCarePro(twitter) which says--

"The system supports a 2.5 inch SATA HDD & 128 GB Solid State Disk 2.5 inch SATA 1.5Gb/s & 3.0Gb/s interfaces".

So is it limited to 128GB only?

No - it will work with larger capacity SSDs.  Just realize you won't see top speed from any SSD because of the slower SATA controller (that is, an inexpensive SSD will work just as well as a high-performance one).
