SSD on Vostro 1710

Hi. I´m writing from Argentina. I hope you to understand  my poor English. Does anybody know if can I open my Vostro 1710 and installl a ssd without taking out the original HD. Can a SSD work properly with my laptop? I would like to use them toghether (the original for files and the OCZ SSD for system and programs).

Thank you very much,

Regards.

There's available place to add a second 2,5"HDD on a Vostro 1710; the problem is that you will need a special SATA cable to connect the second HDD which it seems difficult to find:)

Can you supply the ordering details for this cable?  I just came from a Dell chat session, and they claimed that the only cable they could offer me was $79.99!  They looked into the less expensive cable and said they were for desktop machines only.  I am sure others would be interested in tracking something down less than $30, let alone $80!  Thanks.

Here is a link for anyone trying to find the SATA HDD cable for a 2nd Hard Drive in a Dell Vostro 1710 laptop:

www.newmodeus.com/.../index.php, they have the cable for $29.95 and it works fine, I have ordered & installed mine already. They also have other parts for this laptop.

Installing SSD's requires a WHOLE LOT MORE than just installing the drive.  If you do not set your OS to turn off Indexing, logging,  Hibernation, Defrag, Virtual memory, prefetch, Superfetch, ReadyBoost and many other things writing writing writing to the drive will kill it in as little as a few hours.

Intel recommends users install the firmware update and toolbox, and run the Trim function daily to ensure best performance. Please try to download the firmware upgrade and the Intel SSD Toolbox and Optimizer. These latest tools are designed to help better manage and retain the out-of-box performance of Intel SSDs.

There are many drives that don't properly report that they are SSDs when queried, so Windows is not able to properly apply the SSD optimizations to those drives.

There are some Intel/Microsoft issues that are not resolved yet with the Gen2 SSD drive. Read here for one.

Drives without TRIM lose performance over time and die sooner than drives that support Trim.

Intel® Solid-State Drive Toolbox

The Intel® Solid-State Drive Toolbox (Intel SSD Toolbox) provides the following functional
capabilities:

-  Accessing Intel SSD management features (Intel® SSD Optimizer, System
    Configuration Tuner and Secure Erase)
-  Reporting the drive identification data for Intel SSDs, as well as other drives.
-  Accessing the Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART)
attributes for Intel SSDs, as well as other drives.
-  Checking the SMART thresholds and viewing recommended actions for Intel
SSDs, as well as other drives.
-  Running diagnostic scans on Intel SSDs to check for any READ or WRITE
    errors.

When opened, the Intel® SSD Toolbox displays the following screen with the
name and capacity of each drive on your PC, as well as the following options:

Intel SSD Management Tools – Enables monitoring and managing of
any Intel SSDs associated with this computer.
View Drive Information – Displays the model number, serial number
and firmware number for each drive on the system. It also lists the ATA
and SATA capabilities for the selected drive.
Check SMART Attributes - Lists the SMART features and their respective
thresholds, and, if necessary, indicates any action to take.
Run Fast Diagnostic Scan – Analyzes the first 1.5 GB of an SSD to
determine whether there are any READ or WRITE errors.
Run Full Diagnostic Scan – Analyzes the complete SSD to determine
whether there are any READ or WRITE errors or any bad blocks.

Before initiating the Intel SSD Toolbox installation, be sure to read and precisely follow the instructions included in the Intel SSD Toolbox User Guide, Readme, and Release Notes. There is also a Frequently Asked Questions document available
here. You may wish to print these instructions for easy reference.

The User Guide and Readme.rtf file include the Intel SSD Toolbox installation instructions.

If you need any assistance with the Intel SSD Toolbox installation or experience issues, please contact
Intel Customer Support.

NOTE: Installing this version of the Intel SSD Toolbox will over-write any previous versions of the SDD Toolbox that are on your system.
