Second Hard Drive -- recognition problem at BIOS

I have a dell dimension 8300, P4- 3 G Hz cpu and 1 GB memory and SATA 120 G (maxtor Diamond 9 plus) HD.

I am trying to add a second Hard Drive (ATA maxtor Diamond 9 plus --- IDE) but I can't get the second hard drive recognized by BIOS (version A05). I tried to add the second HD as Master IDE, Slave IDE, Cable Select IDE and turned the corresponding switch from "off" to "auto" at the Drive Configuration section of BIOS. However, none of those efforts worked out. The error message is always like, "Primary Disk 0" not found or "Primary Disk 1 not found"

I even tried to reset the BIOS (by turning Cap, Num and Scroll lock on and pressing Alt+E, Alt+F and Alt+B). It didn't work either.

Could someone give me a hint on how to solve this problem?

Thanks

Try running it as master (in place of the old drive). Is it then recognized?  If not, it's probably faulty.

If it is, try a new data cable.
