System or hard drive crashed ?

My N4510 laptop will not boot, only showes the Dell logo and two options F2 and F12; after a few seconds will show a black screen with info about Intel corp and some patents and the message:

Realtek PCIe FE family controller series v1.19 (08/10/09)

PXE - E61: Media test failure, check cable

PXE - M0F: Exiiting  PXE ROM

Reboot and select proper Boot divice or insert Boot media

It was working normal in the last few days and no sign of issues or anything

What can I do ? And what do you think the problem could be ?  Pelase advice asap, all of my files from work are in my laptop and I have no back up.

Thanks for your help

There no 4510 model in Dell Inspiron line.. Can you provide the exact model number? eg: Inspiron 14R - 4010..

If the battery is removable.. remove the adapter, remove the battery.. press and hold the power button for 2 minutes.. then put the battery and connect the adapter and try booting again..

If you get the same problem again.. suggest you to contact Dell support keep your service tag handy when you call them.

Go into the BIOS setup (F2 at powerup).  Is the hard drive showing up?  If not, unplug the system, remove the battery and disconnect and reconnect the hard drive.  If you need further instructions, please post the system model (what you've posted is not a valid Dell model number).  If the drive then shows up, the VERY FIRST thing to do is remove the drive, mount it into a 2.5" external case and make a backup of your data files.  Once the backup is done, run a full diagnostic on the drive (F12 at powerup).  If the drive fails diagnostics, replace it.

If the drive does not show up after reconnecting it, it's beyond home recovery.  In that case, if you need the data back you will have to weigh the cost of data recovery against the value of the data.  A simple straightforward recovery will run in the $500-600 range;  if more advanced drive forensics are required, the cost can easily double or triple that - or more.  You'll want a reliable data recovery company - Gillware is relatively reasonable in cost and recommended by Dell and most drive makers.

Yes sorry is a Inspiron 15R-2728MRB N5010, I have tried what you said but it didn't make any difference.

Any other suggestion before calling customer service ?

Thanks

Suggest you to remove any drives connected in USB ports, CD drives..

Tap F12 on Dell logo and check if Hard disk is listed #1 in the list.. If not select HDD.

Did you system come with SSD or standard hard drive.. If not check in your invoice..

Some forums suggest to reseat the hard disk on your laptop to fix the issue.. But on your system it cannot be removed by the user.. needs a Dell Technician to do that..

Thanks,

On the screen to select boot divice it does not show the hard disk, only

CD/DVD/CD-RW Device

Network

Diagnostic

Set up

And under boot priority the hard drive is second... I ran a system diagnostic and everything works but the hard drive shirt test saids hard drive not detected.

I guess I need to get someone take a look at it or do you have any other suggestions ?

Thanks for you help

One last step, choose setup - last option on F12 page.. then if you are able to get the BIOS page... Load defaults using F9 key (check at the bottom of screen the key combination would be listed otherwise)..Then press F10 to Save and Exit.. If this step doesnt do the trick, you need to have the HDD reseated by a local technician.. Even after a reseat the HDD is not detected then you need to follow the final resort.

Final Resort

If you have data in the drive, suggest you to contact a local technician get his help for that.. Once data is backed up, call tech support (provided your system In warranty). tell them the steps you did, I am sure they can give you a solution.. If you system is out of warranty, then after your backup is done, purchase a new drive and fit it..

Good luck!

Thank you,

I had a local technician look at it and he is telling me the drive is dead and they can't repair it, that if I need to recover any data (which I do) then  it would have to go to a data recovery specialist, but they weren't able to tell me how the drive died, the laptop is only about 2-3 years old and never moved from the desk.

Do you have any suggestions or could recommend any other places that could take a look at it or for the data recovery do you know of any good and not too expensive specialists?

I'm in Washington state.

Thanks for your help

Gillware is highly regarded and reasonable in cost -- that said, "reasonable" will be minimum of $600-700 for a basic recovery, and depending on what's wrong with the drive, may be much more than that.  They'll provide a no-cost estimate of recovery.

As for the failure mode, hard drives are complex devices that can fail from a host of electrical or mechanical causes.  Any drive  in any notebook can fail at any time.
