Why is Ultra-DMA Mode 6 inactive on my Studio 1558?

Hello,

Maybe someone could help me...

I have a Dell Studio 1558 and using HWiNFO64 (Version 3.88-1400) I found out that my notebook has Ultra-DMA Mode: Total: 6 (ATA-133), but it is always Inactive! I know that Ultra-DMA Mode 6 used to be active on that machine before, but even a clean install couldn't solve this problem. I have all drivers installed from the Dell Support Site, including the Chipset Drivers which I installed first, right after the OS. I wasn't able to find any solution on the web for this issue.

Is it possible that I encountered a hardware damage? I'm also experiencing weak performance.

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Alex S.

DMA is a data transfer architecture that applies only to PATA/IDE hard drives and PATA DVD/CD drives.  The hard drive in the Studio 1558 is a SATA drive, and the only reason that the computer reports Mode 5 DMA is for compatibility with certain programs.  Ultra-DMA has no meaning for a SATA drive.
