Windows 98 does not recognize cdrw/dvd combo drive
I have an Inspiron 2650 with a cdrw/dvd combo drive. Because of a virus, I had to wipe it clean and reinstalled windows 98. Originally the laptop had XP but I do not have the original CDs with the machine.
It is not recognizing the cdrw/dvd combo as a drive under the Windows Explorer. In the Device Manager under System, for a CD-ROM controller it shows MKEPanasonic CD-ROM Drive. And it has a ! yellow message.
I searched the Dell Support site and found the following list of potential drivers for 98:
HLDS 8X DVD Slim-line DRN-8080B
HLDS GDR-8081N 8X Slim DVD
Panasonic UJDA360 Slim 24X CDRW
Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.2
Samsung SN 308B 8X Slim Combo
Toshiba SD-C2502 8X Slim DVD
Toshiba SD-C2612 8X Slim DVD
Toshiba SD-R2102 8X Slim Combo
Downloaded all and tried to install all (except the Roxio stuff), but none of them worked. While doing this madness, I concluded that the drive must be a Panasonic Matshita ujda740 drive, but I’m not sure. Then I downloaded the Panasonic UJDA740 24X DVD/CDRW firmware version 1.03 and tried to install that but did not work.
Questions:
1. Is the drive in this machine the Panasonic Matshita ujda740 ?
2. If yes, where can I find a driver for windows 98?
3. If not, what is the drive I have?
My ultimate goal is to install XP but I can’t do that since I can’t access the CD-ROM.
Thanks.

generic Microsoft driver that we all use. The other things
you have tried are Firmware. Be careful what you do with
those. The wrong one will destroy the drive.
Uninstall the drive in the Device Manager and reboot. Are
there any numbered Error Codes in the Device Manager
(i.e. Code code 19, code 41, etc.)?

btw for the optical drive issue try installing the intel chipset driver.
