XPS M1530 Hard Drive Upgrade - What size is bay? How thick can the drive be?
I want to upgrade to a new Western Digital 750GB or 1TB Laptop drive. Both of these are 12.5 mm thick. Will a drive this thick fit into my drive bay? What is the max external dimension of a hard drive for this laptop?
Thanks,

No, these won't fit - they are 12.5 mm high. The drive bay is 9.5 mm. There are now 640G drives in 9.5 mm format, at 5400 rpm. If you want a 7200, 500G is the limit.
Note that one of the ways WD crammed 750-1000G on a drive, other than by using an additional platter and adding to the height of the drive, is by slowing the rotation to 5200 rpm - the WD Scorpio 750 and 1000 are not high performance drives - they sacrifice speed for capacity.

Hitachi has a 7200 rpm 500 G drive as well - but yes, if you need 7200 rpm, 500G is currently the limit.
