checking hard drive
when i worked with dell on the phone, they had me hit 3 keys on my keyboard to find out if the hard drive was failing. what were those 3 keys please? i was thinking control, alt and D

Yes, CTRL-ALT-D at startup.
Or boot the Dell diagnostic CD and test the drive that way.
