daughter's inspiron 8600 running windows xp home got a blue screen on bootup, first saying that there was a pbr error, then that the system integrity was no good.

she ran dell diagnostics, and it repeated that the integrity was no good.

she decided to try and reinstall windows xp, using the original disc that came with the machine. it ran through part of the installation, went into "copying files" and then said that ntldr was missing. i tried to help her but we kept getting the same message. Someone else told us it was a faulty hd, so we ordered a new one from dell.

new hd came; she installed it. it told her that she had "lots of space" (according to her) empty on it., so she put in the installation disk, and exactly the same thing happened- system integrity no good and mssing ntldr.

could it be that it was not the hard drive? could it be the memory? ( i think she has 256 mg of ram (although it could be more), and it was running fine until a week ago.

I am sort of doing this by remote control, since she is not living at home ( and neither is the computer(

any ideas- please help!
