precision m4500 replacing optical drive with hard drive bay
can my optical drive be replaced with a hard drive bay and, if so, how?

You don't have to take out your optical drive for this purpose. Dell M4500 also has a separate mSATA slot where you can install a mSATA SSD. That way you can have one SSD and still keep your regular HDD and optical drive as well.
