Dell Support Assist Fails to install
Hi there
In April I had a few issues with Dell Support Assist
It wouldn't open or did but said it failed to load after trying to display the dashboard after several minutes.
So I'd usually uninstall it and reinstall it.
Thought lately it did that again but uninstalling it and reinstalling it didn't work.
So I went into the files and deleted some of the folders.
The folders were of the type :
C:\Program Files\Dell\SupportAssist (Update)
*******\AppData\Local\Dell\
One of them was called Vault
Bad idea ofc because it wasn't a usual uninstall.
I tried cleaning the register but to no use.
They were in local Machine SOFTWARE DellSupportAssist (of the sort)
Those actually deleted the existing services in the Task Manager that were left.
I don't see them anymore
I've tried following some of the help on this community, but I still can't reinstall it.
I'm at a loss of options so any help is welcomed

Support Assist will not update. Rather it crashes the Windows Operating System.
System: Windows 11 Pro Version 21H2 XPS8940
Downloaded the Latest version Dell Support Assist Jul 12 2022 from Dell.com. Executed installer (1.0.0.0) and it crashed Windows. Windows displayed "illegal memory access" failure which required reboot. Crashing OS always sends diagnostics to Microsoft for analysis but apparently Dell is not being notified of this failure. eboot fortunately did work result in system recovery.
This is the second attempt in two months expecting that Dell would fix their bug. So the solution is to not update Support Assist, but rather go to individual vendors of the components in your chassis and apply their updates.

Hi guys.
I just had my Support Assist (and Dell Update, and BIOS Update) issues fixed. I wrote a long post how I arrived to solving them. I'm unsure whether my solution can be duplicated for your case - but maybe it can give you ideas to try for.
My post is here: https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/Dell-Support-Assist-and-Dell-Update-failed-Inspiron-3881-desktop/m-p/8232597/highlight/true#M93222

Unfortunately even after deleting temp & vault folders I was unable to install SA. This shouldn’t be this hard. I’m now questioning the SA is not worth the trouble as I can manually update drivers I need.

Thanks for the update
I just tested my troubleshooting steps on a client computer and they worked.
I have a few cases still going on with dell's level 3 team and will keep you all posted \
@SimpsonBowles if you are only looking for drivers updates you can use Dell updates app as an alternative and F12 scans for hardware diags.
SupportAssist is deeply integrated in OS so their would always be problems

Thanks @Imacri for the tip
However Dell only offers to download a update exe version of Dell SALauncher, rather than an msi of a certain version from their page of driver update.
So is there a page to where to get those specific version that Dell doesn't show or seem to put in highlight that much ?
I, by the way, have w10 latest stable edition with the NET Runtime issue because v5 was uninstall probably by Windows Update once it detected it was no longer supported.

Thx for mentionning the video was updated
However, it seems that the NET Runtime is still the issue on my end
Hopefully that still helpd some users out with the issue.
The previous video mentioned files that didn't exist anymore

Thx for the info @Ling Kwa
Hope that helps ppl out.
However for few ppl that have commented my post, to which I thank on commenting about issue/solution helping, because, hopefully that alerts and shows to Dell the security issue of SA, but also helps out other users that have the same or other issues, to helped them find the origin.
Like said previously, it seems to me that the origin of the issue may be multiple, in you instance, a BIOS update + W11 from first look would have been a few factures countributing to that.
For example, users like me that haven't updated to W11 due to not having the time to backup data safely before transition to W11, may get that bios issue, but the NET Runtime issue.
So thx again for sharing your solution.
(P.S. Am I wrong to say that Inspiron is a laptop and not Desktop ? That also "could" be another factor in a way, though all computers have same structure but different components made by different suppliers and different micro-programs)

Hi DavG94:
Please see my 14-Jul-2022 post on page 4 of Ling Kwa's Dell Support Assist and Dell Update Failed - Inspiron 3881 Desktop with Win 11-21H2, as well as the test results Ling Kwa' posted <here> when they ran SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 with different versions of the .NET Core Runtimes.
As far as I know, the "classic" .NET Framework 4.5 and later versions (for Windows PCs only) are compatible with apps that were built with earlier versions of the .NET Framework (e.g., you can use .NET Framework v4.8.0 to run software designed for .NET Framework v4.5.1), but newer .NET Core Runtimes (multi-platform for Windows, macOS, Linux, etc.) do not have this same flexibility. See Bob Rundle's 21-Aug-2021 Forward and Backward Compatibility in .NET Core as well as the MS .NET (Core) support article How Code Changes Can Affect Compatibility, which states "Maintaining forward compatibility is not a goal of .NET Core".
I'm not an expert when it comes to .NET Core Runtime programming so it would be helpful if one of the Dell employees would chime in here and correct me if I'm wrong about all this, but the minimum system requirements <here> for SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 state "Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 and .NET Core Runtime v5.0.14". As far as I know that means you need .NET Core v5.0.x (specifically any version from v5.0.14 to v5.0.17) if you want to run SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 - just installing .NET Core v6.x and/or v7.x likely won't work.
If that is correct then I don't understand why Dell would release a new SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 in June 2022 that requires a .NET Core Runtime v5.0.x that reached end of support on 10-May-2022 and will get no further security updates. At some point in the future I assume Dell will release a newer SupportAssist version designed for the current .NET Core Runtime v6.x API and we’ll have to go through this nonsense again.

Just an FYI that the support page <here> for Ling Kwa's Inspiron 3881 shows that their Inspiron is a desktop computer, not a laptop.
See crimsom's 24-Jun-2022 comments in their thread 17 R5, Dell SupportAssist x64 v3.11.2.143 Installation Failed about issues they had with the v3.11.4.29 .msi installer. If you require the .msi version of the installer you might want to post in that thread and ask crimsom where they found the .msi installer for SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 for their Alienware laptop.
It sounds like you currently have Win 10 v21H2 (OS build 19044.1826) but I don't think you've ever mentioned your Dell computer model. When I perform a clean reinstall of Support Assist on my Inspiron 5584 laptop I always download the SupportAssistInstaller.exe stub installer from the SupportAssist for Home PCs download page as instructed in Dell employee DELL Chris M's SA Uninstall / Reinstall (note that I use Revo Uninstaller Free in "Aggressive" mode to uninstall SupportAssist and other Dell programs to clean up orphaned files and registry entries left behind by the "regular" uninstallers) and let the SupportAssistInstaller.exe stub installer manage the download and installation of SupportAssist.
As I mentioned before, it seems to me that the majority of people who have the .NET Core Runtime v5.0.17 installed and are still having problems installing or running SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 have Win 11 and/or higher-end Alienware / XPS / Latitude / OptiPlex models that have specialized software like the Alienware Command Center (AWCC) or Dell Command client software.

@DavG94 Anytime bro. This forum I believed, thrived by those "no longer under warranty" kind of user, and yet still use the system in daily basis.
Note, FYI, Inspiron line (at least in past 5 years) has both desktop and laptop versions.

SOLUTION SOLVED!
If you have MS .NET Runtime version 6.0.11 then you are missing the HostFXR.dll file.
Go to https://www.dll-files.com/hostfxr.dll.html and download HostFXR.dll v3.0.19 x64.
Now place the .dll file to C:\Program Files\dotnet\host\fxr\7.0.0 then restart Windows.
Or install Microsoft .NET Runtime & Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime v7.0.0 x86/x64.

Hi Silichip-X
I'll have to check that as soon as I can (it can be weeks though)
They may have solved the issue though....

@DavG94
No problem, I manage to fix it now!
P.S. But if this doesn't resolve the issue then use Windows Event Viewer and trace the problem.
