FBA = Fixed Block Architecture.

Its the Open Systems method of laying out disks in a regular Cylinder/Head/Sector arrangement, usually of either 512 or 520 byte sectors.

Virtually all Open Systems (Windows, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Netware, etc) use FBA with 512 byte blocks, which in Symmetrix land is just called FBA.

One exception is the IBM iSeries (AS/400) which uses FBA with 520 byte blocks, and hence requires drives with a different low level format (and therefore different part numbers) in Symmetrix.

The other common emulation type is CKD (Count Key Data) as used by IBM mainframe. This has to be emulated by Symmetrix, because its drives are really formatted in FBA512.

Having said all that, I can't find any reference to IBM_FBA or UNISYS_FBA. The valid emulation types for creating drives in Solutions Enabler 6.4 are:

FBA
CELERRA_FBA
VME_512_FBA
CKD-3380
CKD-3390

(Enginuity 5x67+)
AS/400_M590
AS/400_M590R
AS/400_M6713_30
AS/400_M6713_50
AS/400_M6717_50
AS/400_M9337_5AA
AS/400_M9337_5AC

(Enginuity 5x68+)
AS/400_M6718_50
AS/400_M2105_A01
AS/400_M2105_A02
AS/400_M2105_A81 (Enginuity 5568 only)
AS/400_M2105_A82 (Enginuity 5568 only)

AS/400_M2105_A84
AS/400_M2105_A04

AS/400_M4326_50
AS/400_M4327_50
AS/400_M2105_A05
AS/400_M2105_A85

(Enginuity 5771+)
AS/400_M4328_50
AS/400_M2107_A06
AS/400_M2107_A86
AS/400_M2107_A07
AS/400_M2107_A87

Celerra FBA is a special subtype of FBA for use with EMC's Celerra NAS product. VME_512_FBA is for ICL VME series machines.

So, for all but these exceptions, use FBA emulation for Open Systems operating systems.

Hope that helps!
Marc

I think your answer was very thorough. Very clear, if I may say so. Perhaps he's just not able to look at the ansers yet, because of illness or other projects that don't allow him to join this forum ?

It looks like the question isn't still answered .. no "Correct" answer .. But how can we know what's still missing ?? Rob can you figure out why we don't have a "Correct" answer here ??

Ah, was that him ? I was thinking his HP-UX problem might be related to the "heterogenious" setting.... Haven't read that topic well enough I think....

Santhos forgive our irony .. but usually when a reply doesn't answer your question, it's better to reply to the post and ask more informations .. Leaving the thread alone usually doesn't solve your issues .. :D
