IBM Mainframe to dmx-4

Currently our IBM mainframe is connected to the Shark. Later this year we will be purchasing two new dmx-4 arrays - one in california and one in texas. New mainframes in each location will connect to the dmx-4s. We will also have Windows and AIX hosts connect to the same arrays.

I am familiar with connecting open systems to the DMX as we have two dmx1000s in production along with our Cisco MDS 9506 switches. Currently we are not using SRDF with our open systesms but we plan to when we get the new dmx-4. In addition the IBM mainframes will also do SRDF/A.

No one in my location has any experience connecting DMX to IBM mainframes. In the mainframe will we still have tools like PowerPath, Solutions Enabler, TimeFinder etc?

With open systems I use SE commands like symdev, symmask, symconfigure and ECC to manage my environment. Will we still use these tools on the mainframe or will we be managing the storage with some IBM ISPF menus?

Do we need to add new modules to our Cisco MDS switches so that we can handle IBM's Ficon? Any direction would be appreciated.

Brad,

Welcome to the forum.

The Mainframe will have Ficon channels that will either connect directly to the Symmetrix or go through a Ficon switch. Difference will be that it will be an all open zone type switch and on the Mainframe there is a program or application called HCD or IOCDS. The HCD has entrees or definitions that define the peripherals and its connections. This and other DASD controlling applications are either a start of task and/or controlled via your ISPF login as usual. There are also global control along with work load managers that are Mainframe applications too. Omegamon comes to mind right off for some information.

Hope that this starts this thread a hopping and gives you some ideas along the way too.

Brad,

Opps, sorry for the 'there is a program called..etc' statement.

I realized that after I posted my reply, that if you know about ISPF, you more than likely know about the HCD, etc.

Sorry if this is the case.

Sincerely,

Michael

Michael .. I know that there is an English to Italian translator (via Google Translator) .. but don't you know if there is a Mainframe to Open translator ?? :D

Ha ha ha Stefano.

There is, but something's don't come out equal in the translation results.

OK, thanks for the info. We have EMC coming out next week to discuss. It's interesting that you mention doing some of the mainframe activities from an open systems SE host.

That would be great if I can go to my comfortable AIX servers and create, map, mask and build metas for the Mainframe. Then our MF systems programmer could just do what ever else is needed on the MVS side.

I'll discuss further with EMC next week.

Hi Brad, and welcome to the Forums.

If you already have experience in Open Systems connectivity to Symms you are ahead (or behind depending on how you look at it) where I was when we brought in our DMX3s. We brought them in and migrated mainframe connectivity from an old Symm 8830 and some IBM shark arrays. We migrated some AIX hosts from Shark and CLARiiON to the DMX3. There were definitely some gotchas regarding hosting both types of systems on the DMX at the same time.

As previously pointed out you will need FICON to connect the mainframe, but I can't provide a lot of help on that side. I know the basics, but I don't know mainframe at all. What I CAN tell you is that some of the mainframe functionality CAN be handled from your Open Systems SE host, and some things will have to be controlled by the mf equivalent (I think it is called ResourcePak). There are also some terminology inconsistencies between mf and OS such that you have to be careful when having a cross discipline conversation (e.g. a SNAP is always virtual on OS, but can be virtual or physical on mf).

The best advice I can give you is to rely heavily on your EMC account team through the transition period until you understand more about mixing the environments. We have some VERY strong mf technical resources and some VERY good OS resources and we still spent a LOT of time with EMC over this move.

Do you really feel that AIX is comfortable ??? ;-)

Cheers ..
