The power off script should be run to shut down your DMX in a proper manner.
This can be run once all I/O to the box is halted.
All RDF volumes need to be made NR on the link.
Once this is done the CE or the remote change team can confirm all I/O is stopped.
The power down script will destage all cache to the disk directors it will then offline all FA,Escon and RDF directors.
Once this is complete the box will be in a state to be powered off.
The script will tell the CE or PSE when it is good to power off.
It will also give explicite instructions on how to power off all the bays starting with the storage bays.
Once all the switches have been turned off the DMX will after a number of minutes power down.
The power up sequence is the opposite to the power down sequence.
When the box is fully up all Disk Directors will be online all other directors will be OFFLINE. Here you will need a CE or the remote change team to bring them all online again.
Once all driectors are online you can start to bring your hosts online to the DMX and spin up all RDF volumes.
Your local CE or the remote team can assist with offing the RDF volumes prior to this activity.
Hope this is helpful.

I'd involve EMC .. strange things may happen at power on.. Having a local friendly EMC CE may help when strange things happens. Moreover you can't shutdown a DMX simply pushing the red button, you have to ask EMC. :D

i would document output from:

symcfg list -sid -RA ALL

i had an instance where DMX3000 was brought offline and after it was brought back online the RA groups did not come back online, so i had to manually bring them online using:

symcfg -sid -RA # online

Is the procedure same, for DMX-2 aswell?, I was under a impression that a DMX2 can be shutdown just by a switch, after making sure that their are no i/o to the box?

And also as per the product guides for DMX-4,

"Perform these steps to power down the Symmetrix DMX-4, using the
PDP power switches located on the rear door of the system bay and
storage bays:
1. Stop all processes to the Symmetrix DMX-4.
2. On the rear door of the system bay (Figure 68 on page 282), press
the Zone A and Zone B PDP power switches to the down (O) OFF
position.
3. On the rear door of the storage bays (Figure 68 on page 282), press
the Zone A and Zone B PDP power switches to the down (O) OFF
position.
Note: The BBU modules automatically turn on when the Symmetrix
system detects loss of AC power. The BBU modules will maintain power
to the Symmetrix system for up to five minutes while the global memory
is vaulted to the vault drives."

Do we still need EMC/PSE assistance to perfrom a planned power-down/up of a DMX? Please do note that we do not have SRDF in our current environment.

And please help me understand how the procedure differs for other DMX models.

It's always better to have an EMC CE logged in while shutting down (and booting) any Symmetrix/DMX storage.

An EMC CE will check that you really don't have IOs. An EMC CE will take care of broken parts on startup. An EMC CE will run health checks both before powering down and resuming your storage.

Yes it costs .. but worth the cost. :-)

This is the DMX-1/2 procedure for power down from page B-3:

"Perform these steps to power down the Symmetrix system using the
AC (black) power switch located on the rear door of the Symmetrix
system.
1. Stop all processes to the Symmetrix DMX systems.
Note: All pending write operations should complete within five minutes.
If a device fails to complete its write operations within this time period, it
could indicate a problem with that device. Call the EMC Service Support
Center for assistance, if necessary.
2. Press the AC (black) power switch on the rear door (Figure B-1 on
page B-2) to the down (O) position. Do not press the EPO (red)
switch."

As Stefano mentioned, it's always recommended that an EMC Field Representative be present for power down/power up sequences on Symmetrix DMX family products; however, it's not a requirement.

Hope this helps,

PSE Chris

When you power down a Box with SRDF this box stop automacly all process in SRDF enviroment, and when you put this box power on again, all copy is sttoped until you restart SRDF with command -establish, but it's better to split all devices and establish when all the power on is finished.
You need to check the parameter in bin file for this:

RDF

Force RAs Links off-line after power-up? YES
