how to create new devs in DMX 4

Hi

Iam going to create 300mb for Oracle Rack new devices in my DMX 4 and I have the following questions:

I am going to use this group

Disk Group 8:

DF-1A 01A C C SEAGATE T146155 48 140014 1711 140014
DF-16A 16A D C SEAGATE T146155 48 140014 1711 140014
DF-1B 01B D C SEAGATE T146155 48 140014 1711 140014
DF-16B 16B C C SEAGATE T146155 48 140014 1711 140014
DF-1C 01C C C SEAGATE T146155 48 140014 1711 140014
DF-16C 16C D C SEAGATE T146155 48 140014 1711 140014
DF-1D 01D D C HITACHI H146R15 48 140014 1711 140014
DF-16D 16D C C SEAGATE T146155 48 140014 1711 140014

and this command:
create dev count=5, size=600, emulation=FBA, config=raid-5, disk_group=8;

The questions are:

will the symmetrix assign the new devices name? I mean my last dev name in my symmetrix is 1792

will the symmetrix configure the RAID-5 automatically? I have RAID-5 3+1 now.

Is there any mistakes in my command?

Best regards

1) yes, symconfigure will create new devices using new device names never used before.
2) you specified raid-5 so it will do raid-5, you can specify "data_member_count=7" for RAID-5 7+1 or "data_member_count=3" for RAID-5 3+1.

DMX4 has 960K cylinder size so if you have solutions 6.5 installed, your script would create 562 megabyte devices, if you set size=320 (300MBx1024/960) that will create a 300MB device.

Take a look at this thread, look for Stefano's comment about "SYMAPI_TRACK_SIZE_32K_COMPATIBLE" variable in the options file.

Hey Dynamox don't forget to check guanabacoa'as microcode version .. With codes up to 5671 you can't mix different RAID5 protection in the same box (thus no need to choose data_member_count) ;-)

Hi

My Microcode version is 5772.92.84

for example the info for 0A55 dev 8.43GB

Mirror Set Type : [RAID-5,RAID-5,N/A,N/A]
ack End Disk Director Information
{
Hyper Type : RAID-5

RAID-5 Device Information
RAID-5 Hyper Devices (3+1):

Device : 0A55
{
--------------------------------------------------------------
Disk DA Hyper Member Spare Disk
DA :IT Vol# Num Cap(MB) Num Status Status Grp# Cap(MB)
--------------------------------------------------------------
15A:D5 1019 1 2881 1 RW N/A 13 140014
15B:C5 95 1 2881 3 RW N/A 13 140014
02C:C5 95 1 2881 2 RW N/A 13 140014
02D:D5 764 1 2881 4 RW N/A 13 140014

I have solutions enablere 6.4

Then my command must be

create dev count=5, size=320, emulation=FBA, config=raid-5, disk_group=8, data_member_count=3;

can you run this command and post its output:

grep "SYMAPI_TRACK_SIZE_32K_COMPATIBLE" /var/symapi/config/options

Hi

I have a doubt due to If i use size=320 my lun will be 150Mb

create dev count=5, size=320, emulation=FBA, config=raid-5, disk_group=8;

Let me show you

320 Cilynders * 960K cilynder size
= 307200 512-byte Blocks * 512
= 157286400 bytes/1024 to get KB
=153600 KB/1024 to get Mb
=150Mb

is it correct my comments? or I made a mistake?

about my command and the xe2sdc' comment I dont need to use the data_member_count is it correct'

300 megabytes is 307200 kilobytes, since 1 cylinder on DMX3/4 is 960 kilobytes you divide 307200 by 960 and you get 320 cylinders.

Dynamox note that options file doesn't define variable status. Depending on S.E. version, default behaviour changed.
When using S.E. 6.5, default is that translation is disabled, thus 320 cyls are the right size. When using S.E. 6.4 default is to ENABLE translation, thus 320 cyls are half of required size... I'd check S.E. version ;-)
