Dell newbie, advice for initial management software setup?

Hi all,

I am new to Dell servers so was looking for some advice please. I have a R230 which will be used as a standalone server hosting a single DC VM for a small office.

I loaded up Lifecycle Controller and ran all updates, I then created a RAID1 array, used the deploy OS option and installed the OS. Once in the OS I downloaded Dell SUU from the product download page and updated the NIC and Intel chipset drivers, after a reboot I ran it again and it says all is up to date. I installed OpenManage Essentials and SupportAssist Enterprise, during this I had it install all critical prerequisites.

Do I need to install any more management utilities? My aim is to have email reports set up for system health (in particular the RAID array) and to have a route to update the drivers/firmware when needed.

I use a lot of Dell client PCs and find Dell Command Update or SupportAssist excellent for updates, is there a similar option or should I download SUU each time a new revision is released and run that? Any other tips of software to install for this standalone server?

Thanks!

Hello

You should be able to use OpenManage Essentials/Enterprise to manage updates on the system. It has the ability to check our online catalog to see what is available and compare that against what is installed. OpenManage Enterprise is the replacement of OpenManage Essentials. It would probably be best to use OMEnt instead of OME. There are older systems that are not supported by OMEnt, so which one you use will depend on your needs.

You may also want to install OpenManage Server Administrator into the host OS. The iDRAC8 is a feature rich agent, but OMSA may allow additional management and monitoring options within OMEnt/OME.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, would I remove Essentials and then install Enterprise or can it be installed over the top? I had an email from SupportAssist to say that SNMP is not configured or OMSA installed so will look into that too once I know about OME.
