ESX OpenManage & Storage Management

Hey there,

we have some issues with OpenManage on ESX server. It appears everything works fine _except_ the storage part. Unfortunately, the storage part is the reason we installed it in the first place.

It appears the storage info isn't reread. For example, the fan speed alters every few minutes, but if I unplug a disk from the PERC 6/i RAID-5 set it will happily keep on telling me everything is fine and that the disk is still there. Same goes for the ITA it's connected too, that however does log a hardware event that a disk was unplugged.

When restarting the OpenManage services on ESX it rereads _once_ and thus nicely generates an alert through ITA which I receive in my mail and both the OpenManage webinterface and ITA report the RAID-5 set is rebuilding. However same issue still applies, info is not reread. It will for example forever tell me rebuilding is at 28%, until services are restarted.

Anyone know what's going on? Software appearantly is capable of working, but has problems rereading the data.

Kind regards

Have you upgraded/Updated drivers/firmware on the ESX server?  If you did, did you use VMWare's drivers/firmware or did you use Dell's?  If you used Dell's drivers you might have a big problem in your hands, as VMWare specifically tells you not to use any drivers/firmware other than VMWare approved drivers/firmware.

I'm completely amazed that Dell doesn't allocate a special section within their OS category for VMWare/ESX-compatible software.

Hi Jimmy,

didn't update any of the drivers. Just installed ESX 3.5, then installed OpenManage. What amazes me most is that it actually can read the status, it just doesn't update it after the software is started. Any easy work-around would be to create a cronjob that restarts the openmanage software every hour or so. Atleast then we would get notified on disk failure.

Thanks for the re'.

This is a know issue found in ESX 3.5. VMware just released a patch to fix the issue. See:http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003460

Also refer to the OM installation guide for ESX for more information: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/solutions/installing_dell_openmanage_on_esx.pdf
