FC430 - changing the boot order and boot sequence via RACADM

Hi, I don't know if anyone else has had this issue, but I'm trying to change the boot order and boot sequence on an FC430 using firmware v2.70.70.70.

We want to set the Boot Mode to BIOS from UEFI, which works fine and is completed following the below in two RACADM commands.

* set BIOS.BiosBootSettings.BootMode BIOS

* jobqueue create BIOS.Setup.1-1 -r pwrcycle

Once the FC430 is rebooted we then, want to set the boot sequence, so we run the below three RACADM commands, the second 'get' command is just confirming the iDrac has received the boot sequence changes.

* set BIOS.BiosBootSettings.BootSeq NIC.Embedded.1-1-1,HardDisk.List.1-1,Unknown.Unknown.1-1, Unknown.Unknown.2-1

* get BIOS.BiosBootSettings.BootSeq (Pending Value=NIC.Embedded.1-1-1,HardDisk.List.1-1,Unknown.Unknown.1-1,Unknown.Unknown.2-1)

* jobqueue create BIOS.Setup.1-1 -r pwrcycle

The FC430 then reboots and enters the 'Automate Task Application' screen and starts to run the task to make the changes, however the task never completes within the given 10 minute task time limit? The task times out and fails at 34% (in the iDrac Job Queue), the FC430 then reboots without changing the boot sequence.

Oddly, if I then run the 'Get' RACADM command again it still shows the task as pending?

I hope the above makes sense, can anyone advise what I could be doing wrong please? - thanks in advance.

The steps you followed are correct. I am not sure why 2 devices are shown as Unknown in boot sequence. You can try after updating iDRAC (2.75.75.75) and BIOS (2.11.0) to latest version. You can also try running jobqueue command without reboot (jobqueue create BIOS.Setup.1-1) and reboot the server manually after jobqueue command.

On one server can you try without USB Floppy and Optical drive.

Hi Shine,

Thanks for the prompt response and confirmation on the correct RACADM commands.

Apologies I mistyped the firmware version, we are running firmware v2.75.75.75 and BIOS 2.11.0 on our FC430s, the two Unknown devices are the USB Floppy and USB Optical device.

I've just tried the below, however the issue remains the same??

* jobqueue create BIOS.Setup.1-1

* serveraction hardreset

Unfortunately its not just this FC430, we've got over 20+ of these devices and it seems the same across all of them, would you know if there is anything else we could try?

Many thanks

Hi Shine,

I think you were on the right track when you questioned the Unknown.Unknown.1-1,Unknown.Unknown.2-1 devices, these relate to the Virtual Floppy and Virtual Optical drive in the boot sequence, however all my FC430s register these devices as shown below:

- Unknown Device: USB Floppy

- Unknown Device: USB Optical device

I was testing aka 'playing about' with one of the FC430s and managed to get it to register the devices as the below..

- Virtual Device: USB Floppy

- Virtual Device: USB Optical device

I was then able to change the boot sequence using the RACADM commands?! However its now reverted back to 'Unknown.Unknown.1-1,Unknown.Unknown.2-1' and I cant recall what I did to resolve this which is most frustrating..

I've tried a iDrac and virtual reset with no joy, I suppose the question is now.. what would make the USB Floppy and USB Optical device register themselves as unknown?

Many thanks

I am not sure why it is reverting back to unknown. Can you change virtual media "Attach Mode" to "Detach" on iDRAC and check. After this change these 2 items should not be shown in BIOS boot sequence. You can find this setting on "Overview -> Server -> Attached Media" page of iDRAC GUI.

Hi Shine,

Thanks, I followed your advice and went.. Overview -> Server -> Attached Media" and set the attach mode to 'Detach' and applied the settings, I also did a cold restart for good measure, then hit F2 on the console on start up to check the boot sequence.

Oddly the unknown devices are still selected in the boot sequence? I unticked them saved and rebooted to find they were still selected in the BIOS after the event. I've scanned the internet and cant see anything like this anywhere else?

Another odd thing is that the firmware is version v2.75.75.75 however the under the IDRAC Settings, the iDRAC Settings Version is 2.40.40.05 does that sound right?

Many thanks again.

iDRAC Settings Version of 2.40.40.05 you seeing is correct. iDRAC FW and iDRAC Settings utility can have different version.

It is odd that BIOS still showing virtual media drives even after detaching it on iDRAC.

Hi,

Apologies for the delay with this, its been a challenging few months (i'm sure we'll all agree)

FC430 - Boot order issue - By accident I've found a way to clear the UNKNOWN DEVICE: USB devices in the boot order and return them to the VIRTUAL DEVICE: USB FLOPPY and VIRTUAL DEVICE: USB Optical device.

This is completed by attaching to the console via HTMLv5 and selecting the 'Virtual Media' tab, then 'reseting USB', once complete... cold boot the server, F11 back into the BIOS boot order and the USB devices are then labelled correctly.

An image can then be taken and deployed to there devices, however they also have to have the virtual USB set correctly..(happy days!)

The question is.. can the 'Reset USB' be completed with a racadm or a vmcli command?

Thanks in advice for any pointers..

(please note: a racreset doesn't seem to do a Reset USB)

BIOS: v2.11

FW: v2.75.75.75

There is no command to reset USB. You can try changing virtual media Attach Mode setting to Detach and Attach instead of USB reset and see whether that fixes the issue. If not you can try racreset as well.

Hi,

thanks for the prompt update, yes thats how I worked around it.

Is there away to automate that task, I have a fair few FC430s.

Thanks in advance

You can run below commands to detach and attach virtual media

racadm set iDRAC.VirtualMedia.Attached Detached

racadm set iDRAC.VirtualMedia.Attached Attached
