IT Assistant and Java -Xmx256M

Hi, I'm trying to access the Software Update feature in ITassistant. It tells me I need to increase the heap size using -Xmx256M... but when I add this into the java control panel config, close IE and start ITassistant again, it fail complaining it can't load Java.. Java 1.6.0_03 XP Pro OS Any ideas?

Thank you for posting. Are you using the latest version of ITAssistant, which is 5.3? If so, are you able to uninstall the java you have and then launch ita, and let ita install the version it has bundled? Additionally, can you give us the exact error message when you attempt to launch ita? Provided is a link to the latest ITA version. Let us know. Thank you.

The following KB Hotfixes's  in XP are suspected to interfere with the -Xmx setting of Java. KB927891 KB931836 KB931768. If they are not critical to you  try removing these KB hotfixes or alternatively try to access the web interface of ITA alone from another machine (W2K3 machines are  supposed to be fine for this

Or, you may want to give a try with Firefox.
IT Assistant version 8.1 supports Firefox for both Windows and Linux ( http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/smitasst/8.1/en/ug/planning.htm#1078370).

Hi adrianmarsh,

had the same problem as you. Tried everything out, without success.
Finally installed XP Service Pack 3 RC1 and everything is fine.
No more errors with the java option -Xmx256M.
Try it, but don´t forget to backup important files before installing SP 3 RC1.

Good luck

Hi Guys,

I have this same/similar problem... I have tried the RC3 install as well with no luck....

My issue is that I type in the required option, hit okay, hit apply, go back in and have a look and it has disapeared.

I have tried rebooting/different Java versions/different user accounts (DA, Local admin etc) after applying the change with no luck. Oh and those security updates are NOT installed on this machine. I have also tried other machines with the same result.

Any ideas?? can this be changed in the registry? or not since is Java???

Thanks,
Stuart.

Hi There,

I had a few.... but the issue has been resolved... I was placing the text into the wrong field. I should have read the error message in more detail.

Thanks,
Stuart.
