Is There An OpenManage Solution For VMware ESXi 4.0
I have a PowerEdge 6850 connected to a PowerVault 220S (via SCSI cable) that is in use as a VMware ESXi 4.0 server. My current issue is that one of the disks on the PV 220S seems to have gone (alarm keeps going and flashing amber on the disk light). However an even bigger problem is that I currently have no way of managing the RAID configuration. Therefore I can't rebuild the disk or do any of the disk management tasks I could do if OpenManage were installed under Windows.
Is there anything that can be done to allow me access to management of the VMware ESXi server without having to down all the guests, then the host server in order to get to the BIOS to allow rebuilding etc of disks?

Good morning Rabjac,
It doesn't look like we released a OM version for ESXi on the 6850. What I would imagine as the next best thing might be using the VIB from a 2950. The VIBs themselves are not system-dependent; what is of concern for the model of the system is the OMSA version. For a 6850 the last supported OM version was 5.5. The earliest we supported ESXi 4.0 with OMSA was version 6.1.1. 6.2 had a lot of improvements over 6.1.x so I would recommend trying that one which is available from downloads.dell.com/.../oem-dell-openmanage-esxi_6.2.0-A00.zip with installation instructions at www.dell.com/.../poweredge-2950 or else try 6.1 for which the webpage is currently inaccessible: downloads.dell.com/.../oem-dell-openmanage-esxi_6.1-0000.zip
Installing OMSA on ESXi does require a reboot of the host. From the sound of it you are needing something right now without a reboot and unfortunately I am not aware of a means to accomplish that without installing OMSA first.
Let me know how it goes if I can provide additional information or assistance on this. Best of luck to you!

Hi Jonathan,
Many thanks for the reply. I've been having a look at the Dell OpenManageEssentials product and it seems to have the ability to manage servers without installing anything on them - is this correct or am I misreading? I was wondering if this would be a good fit to install on my laptop and allow me to monitor/manage all our Dell kit including the ESXi mentioned in my original post (we have laptops, desktops and servers internally and some servers in our Hosted environment at our DataCenter)? If I were to install OME on my laptop, would this mean my laptop had to be on and connected constantly to the network?
TIA.

First, you can monitor systems using OpenManage Essentials without installing anything on the node, but you will get much less information from those systems. OpenManage Server Administrator is required on the node to get all alerts about hardware issues. Also, OME requires 2008 R2, so you can't install it on your laptop. Even if you had that OS on your laptop, you don't want to put OME on it because it can't monitor anything if it isn't connected to the network.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the reply. Is there anything you could suggest as a "best" monitoring solution for our Dell kit? I have had a look at Nagios, but I'm not sure if this would be the best way forward. The ideal scenario would be not to use a server specific product for this if at all possible. It's very rarely that my laptop is off the network, however there is always the potential of a reboot due to WIndows Updates etc.
TIA.
