OpenManage SNMP and WLBS

i have a monitoring server running OpenManage IT Assistant v.6.5.  All my Dell servers have OpenManage v.1.6 installed.

they all send traps to the console & are manageable from it except for two.  The big difference between those two and the rest of the machines is that those two are running Windows 2000's Network Load Balancing Service to load-balance their web servers.  Each has only one NIC in it, and when WLBS is active, you see only one ethernet address for both servers -- you see only the phony cluster MAC and the cluster IP.  This is what I think is the source of the problem.

i found in the IT Assistant help that you should choose "Instrumentation Name Resolution" instead of "DNS Name Resolution" (under Options | Discovery Cycle | "Discovery Settings" tab for clustered systems, but it doesn't help with this.

i get errors from those two machines in the console of 'EMS category: security' reading "Windows NT Authentication error: community name incorrect."  The names & settings have been verified multiple times, and they are right.  SNMP has even been disabled, reconfigured, etc., on these two web servers, & we always get that error.  So i think the error is actually bogus, and that the problem is the use of WLBS and single NICs.

anyone have an idea how to get this working?

thanks

Hi,

Sorry about the multiple posts, I have four monitors on my workstation and sometimes my keys and mouse movements get mixed up... anywho, I have been having a similar problem using Win2K3 NLB and ALB clustering. Clearly it is the shared IP resource. On my ALB cluster, I could not get Server Administrator to install, until I moved all the resources over to the node I was installing it on, I suspect the dormant disk resources were ticking off the install program. I am using ITA 6.5 and OM 1.8, so my problems are not exactly the same as yours.

However, with NLB clusters, I can only get one on the 2-node clusters to appear in IT-Assistant at any given time. Thanks to your post, I suspect it is because I have not been using the Instrument Name thingy. However, have you, or have you not, added the shared IP resources into the excluded part of the discovery ranges? Some of my NLB problems (multiple ITA hosts for one machine with multiple IPs) simply disappeared.

Hi,

Just a heads up, the Named Instrumentation thing didn't clear up the problem.

I am still only getting on node in a multi-node cluster to appear in ITA's list of managed servers at one time.

I cornered our north-east sales manager at an event where I work and he is going to put me in touch with our technical rep to sort out the problem.

I will keep you posted.

Does anyone have any updates on this issue?  IT Assistant 6.5.3 doesnt seem to take care of this any better.  I have multiple clusters that consist of Win2K,  Win2K3 and even a Windows Powered cluster.  All of these behave the same way in IT assistant.  Only one server per wlbs cluster will show up in IT Assistant.

Any information on how to solve this, if possible? Or have any info on if this will be remedied in the future?

Thanks,
