You can try updating all FW using Platform Specific Bootable ISO which is available in below link. This is a bootable ISO image which can update all server FW and BIOS

I've had a chance to try the USB bootable drive approach - but the bios fails to boot from it. I can tell the ISO image is copied correctly because I can see the drive is renamed 'CDROM'.
I will try and follow the other methods and see how far I get.
So this proved a little tricky. I could not mount the ISO because of Java permissions issues not allowing me to launch the Virtual Console. However, I ended up using an old Windows machine laying around and could then launch the Virtual Console, mount the ISO and update the firmware. With the new firmware I could then use the LifeCycle Controller to connect to Dell via https and again update the firmware to the latest version (for iDRAC it's now v2.83.83.83).
So far so good. Except that now parts of the iDRAC web interface that were working before any update (such as the Summary page and the Virtual Console) are showing me the spinning wheel running forever. This happens both on the old Windows machine and a mac I'm using. The other pages of the iDRAC web interface seem to work just fine, or as well as before. So for example I can see the inventory page and the Virtual Console setting page. From there I can launch the Virtual Console which starts the java app only to then hang forever while 'it's connecting'.
Am I missing something? Do I need to install anything else to be able to use the Virtual Console working again?

Can you clear browser cache and check the behavior? For Virtual Console can you try with HTML5 plugin?

You can mount the ISO using iDRAC Virtual Media and try to boot to it.
