PowerEdge 860 - Using DRAC 4 and management

Hi all

Would be very gratefull for someone to assist a beginner when it comes to server management.  My first 860 arrived this evening, no rails, no bezel (I can live with that), no OS but no disks or any pointers in how to get the DRAC 4 setup and how to get the best from Out of Band management.

The dell site has around 5 .iso CDs - do I need them all or any?
I'm just interested in the IPMI info and KVMoIP (aka remote console, reboot and hardware monitoring functions)

I suspect the Drac 4 PCI card runs a web server and all I need is to CTRL D at server boot, configure the IP address and login from IE?

I've seen OpenManage, DRAC 4 GUI (probably the DRAC's own webserver), IT Assistant - but which one?

I can't even find much of use using Dell's own search or even Google...

Would appreciate a 'leg up' to get me going.  Cheers
Lea

One of the CDs you have is Installation and Systems Management.  This is bootable and can be used to reinstall your OS.  It also contains Server Administrator which is the instrumentation for your server.  It contains the RAID management software and it monitors all of the sensors for temp, fan RPM, ETC.

The DRAC 4 is completly OS independant.  When the system boots, hit CTRL+D then configure the NIC (DHCP or static) then you can connect to it from any supported browser on the LAN.  IE 6 only with JRE 1.5.03 or later.  Make sure the Firmware is 1.4.1 and all of the required ports are open.

No disks were provided with the hardware so I'm guessing to download the iso image containing the 'installation and systems management'?  Seems a little strange not to provide anything, not even a note within the delivered hardware.

Also, when I purchased the server (around 7 days ago) it was clearly advertised with a much higher 'rating' ie the comparison/performance circles where originally fully blue, yet today I notice they are bearly filled - I feel slightly cheated it has to be said, especially as I have no bezel, side rails (perhaps I do not require these), CDs or instruction.

Many thanks for the pointers, much appreciated
Lea
