When you installed the software and then logged in as root, did you go to check that under Advanced Settings that UserVars.CIMvmw_OpenManageProviderEnabled should be set to 1?
I have confirmed the UserVars.CIMvmw_OpenManageProviderEnabled is set to 1. I attempted to attach screen shot, but the dell community site is not cooperating with me today.
I am having the same issue except with SolarWinds which is what we use for monitoring SNMP. I have tried both OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-6.5.0-542907.VIB-ESX50i_A02 and OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-7.1.0-5304.VIB-ESX50i_A00 on our new ESXi 5.0.0 Update 1 (build-768111) server. Both work when using the OMSA to view the Dell PowerEdge M905 hardware such as Hard Drive and RAM info, but when doing a SNMP walk or just a get request with the specific Dell OID I do not get anything back for any of the Dell hardware. I have tried other SNMP clients and SNMP is enabled in ESXi as I can pull NIC information. Also UserVars.CIMvmw_OpenManageProviderEnabled is set to 1.
We do not use OMSA nor do we want to so I need the information through SNMP. This previously worked with ESX and using the Net-SNMP agent in Linux.
how did you manage to get OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-6.5.0-542907.VIB-ESX50i_A02 to connect from OMSA? I always get the message that the authentication failed. I use the free version of VMWare ESXI 5 on my home server.
The Server Administrator does not support SNMP Get and Set operations on VMWare ESXi 4.X and ESXi 5.x as the required SNMP support is unavailable. However the Server Administrator supports SNMP traps on VMware ESXi 4.X and ESXi 5.X.
Please refer the OpenManage Server Administrator User Guide available @
I didn't do anything special. I just installed 6.5 again and it connects just fine using root user and checking the ignore cert box. We are using the paid version of ESXi though if that makes any difference.
Thank you for the response. So you are saying VMWare's ESXi SNMP agent doesn't support what's needed to pull hardware information from the OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-7.1.0-5304.VIB-ESX50i_A00?
How does the OMSA pull the information then? Is it not possible to have OM run its own SNMP agent that we poll? I noticed when running "/usr/lib/ext/dell/srvadmin/bin/dataeng status" OM does install a service called dsm_sa_snmpd, what does that do then?
Yes. The CIM is used for supporting the ESXi. The OpenMange Server Administrator User Guide Introduction section with "Systems Management Standards Availability" explains the availability of SNMP and CIM in different platforms. Also Please refer to the CIM Reference Guide @ <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> for more details.
The SNMP Agent supports the SNMP Trap configuration (Trap Destination and SNMP community name) as the ESXi systems with OMSA can generate and forward the traps to the configured management Station.
I believe I understand completely what you are saying. But I would like clarification. My understanding is that in ESX 5 the Dell OpenManage Service no longer supports SNMP to gather information regarding Dell specific hardware, except with the use of the Dell Openmanage Essentials. Therefore, any third party SNMP tools (such as SNMPWALK, nagios, Solarwinds Engineers Toolset) cannot retrieve dell hardware specific SNMP data from openmange. Is my understanding correct?

Verify if it is enabled and let me know.

Baraoic,
thank you for the answer. Which OS do you use for the OMSA installation for remote access to the Dell software on the ESXi server?

Fant.
