Problems with Dell Venue 8 Pro and Miracast

Haven't been able to get Miracast working with Netgear PTV3000 or Actiontec Screenbeam. Firmware is up to date. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Did you have to do anything specific to get it working? I tried latest drivers and firmware, but still no joy.

Yes, but without knowing what steps you've already taken and specifically what ptoblems you're still experiencing, I can only repeat what's already been posted here, so please spend some time reading the posts and trying the suggestions that might apply to your circumstances...

I re-read, can you post what you did to get it working please?i don;t see anywhere that you did anything that made it work properly.

1. Verify you have latest firmware in your Miracast adapter & all Dell & M'soft updates on V8P

2. Get initial connection working, with  tablet, TV and router in same room & close together; move them to preferred locations one-at-a-time, after initial setup is working OK

3. Use 5GHz band on router for tablet WiFi connection

4. Keep tablet oriented in landscape mode

5. Project to External Display (TV) using "Duplicate"

6. Set TV input to port connected to Miracast

7. Enter Pairing Code & Go!

Thanks so much! This is encouraging to hear at least one person got this working.
Since I have latest FW and software updates- i'm using the actiontec miracast beam pro.And a Cisco Valet m10 router.
Can you advise what miracast unit you're using (was it netgear 3000?) and what router your using?

So far I can get it working in extended and second screen ONLY modes. But the V8P is so unstable its unusable, the mouse lags so bad I can't use it or a keyboard. Touch is useless since I can't see the local display.

Thanks again for all the help here.

Yes, Netgear PTV3000.

"Mouse lags" - suggests your tablet is being burdened by extra hardware, backgtound software &/or attempting to display too many pixels. Set Display mode to Duplicate Screens before attempting to Project in Devices. Trouble-shooting will be far more difficult, unless you are willing to roll-back to most-basic configuration then modify one thing at a time. You will never achieve the same performance from Miracast that wired HDMI can deliver, but you should be able to get smooth projection of your 1280 x 800 desktop and playback of most 720p video — when connected to charger (the latest VLC or K-lLite/MPC may also help with that). I suspect that you are still haven't read all the forum posts on Miracast; understanding more about how it works may help you recognize problems with your configuration. If you want a more condensed view, check posts under my screen name.

Actiontec support may also be able provide some guidance with your issues... :emotion-15:

Thanks for the netgear PTV3000 confirmation. How about router details? It would be good to know if the 5Ghz is an issue?

I've read the forums exhaustively, and am running parallel conversations on other forums on actiontec as well. Not sure why you think I'm not reading? Did you already put the step-by step details in a previous post I missed??

Anyway - I am working from a brand-new VP8 unit. fully patched and upgraded. Still no like getting duplicate display. When I click on duplicate, it just clicks off, and remains disabled.

I was wondering if you could post links to the specific driver(s) you updated and whatever software you downloaded to get your configuration working? I D/L'ed ALL the ones under the support in Dell website, one at a time - checking between each. Maybe I missed one, would like to just double-check you're using the same I am using?

Thanks again.

Hi - have you had any more luck following Louie's instructions? I'd like to see if ANYONE else has been able to get VP8 working reliably with ANY miracast configurations??

So far, in the whole world - it looks like just one guy??

My router is an Apple Airport Extreme AC; howwever you don't need5GHz for basic Miracast connectivity but it can help throughput when <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU> video over LAN.

You may find benefit from Intel graphic update also. Unless you are high-functioning geek, always use auto-detect feature for determining eligible updates from Dell, Intel and Microsoft.

If you can "see" mouse lag, then you're not following advice about starting-off basic; connect tablet only to charger — no other USB devices or "helpful" 3rd-party add-on software; delete your previously paired Projector connection & start  over with a new one.

Sorry — but I can't help you further, because I moved-on from Dell and Miracast more-than 2 months ago...

Gotcha. Thanks for the help. I've yet to find anyone else that has it working on DVP8! I think the community is sure you have some magic :emotion-2:

As I said before I can't see my display, so the mouse was needed. I get lag using touch without the mouse, and like I also said, it's extremely unstable. Flipping sideways on a whim, and locking up no matter what I do...

Guess I'll be returning this puppy. Actiontec said they don't support the DVP8, and Dell doesn't know what Miracast is. So - I guess I'll be following your path and moving on from Dell Miracast as well.

thanks again for trying! i do really appreciate the effort.

Way-back when, I picked the Netgear over Actiontec based on reading reviews reporting the same issues you've been experiencing. However, some Actiontec owners have reported success with the V8P. Unfortunately, Dell never submitted any of their WIN8 tablets to WiFi Alliance for Miracast certification, so Actiontec, Netgear & others just play a laugh-track when you ask for assistance with their respective adapters. Miracast started-out primarily for Android devices, and Google 'muscled' all tablet & cellphone vendors to include Miracast support on all devices running 4.2 or later. Dell, HP, Lenovo & other WIN8 tablet-makers apparently all made the mistake of saying: "How hard can that be?" — because they already supported Intel WIDI on Core i3/5/7 chipsets.

I still think you might find acceptable results if you let go of your assumptions & try all the suggestions I've offered — particularly, get your tablet on charger, place tablet TV & router close together, delete the prior device pairing & ck. Intel site for possible graphics update. However, I can no longer be certain how well any of this might work bc there have been several OS & firmware updates which affect graphics performance, since I gave up on Dell tablets... Even so,I will dispute any suggestion that my success was due to "magic" — and it feels a bit insulting ,since that ignores the fact that I also went thru an excruciatingly-long, slow learning curve. Posts to user forums are generally from folks having issues with a product (and from assorted Trolls, of course). Contented users rarely log on to brag about that, so you can get a distorted picture about a product from just relying on forum posts. A more reliable indicator (IMO) is the availability of large quantities of manufacturer-refurbished products thru e-Bay & other discount outlets...

It wasn't Miracast issues that caused me to eventually return all 3 V8Ps and a V11; in the end, we found Dell's active digitizer screens were way-too-twitchy for casual use on routine tasks like mail & browsing — even after waiting 3 months to finally get upgraded replacement styli. In a final, typical irony, Dell then refused to take-back those brand-new replacement pens when we finally did receive them, because — get this — our original stylus order date was far-beyond Dell's "21-day" return policy.

So, those 3 brand-new rev. A01 styli now sit prominently on the top-layer of my desktop clutter,  serving as a daily reminder of just how drunk & desperate I'll need to be, to risk buying anything directly from Dell again — at least 'til the pens get buried under a few more months of magazine subscriptions...

So, please — anybody with a better memory than mine — if I ever show up here again, whining about something else — remind me I said that and then shoot me!

:emotion-12:

(even the <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU> unsubscribe options don't seem to be working...)

No insult was ever intended. Why would I insult someone who was just trying to help? I already tried all your suggestions with no joy. I figured you had some real luck, that others did not, myself included..

Glad everything worked out for you - like I said, I have scoured the forums and spent more than a few hours educating myself. You are indeed the only one reporting a working V8P, that I've been able to find anyway - I welcome another thread(s) showing other successes.

I'm sure mine doesn't work after tedious effort  - so possibly you had just the right combo of things? Apologies for suggesting otherwise. Thanks again for the help.

I use the V8P daily with three Netgear PTV3000s to project to a classroom projector, an office computer monitor and a home Sony Bravia TV. All work as expected in extend and duplicate mode. With the Sony TV I had to change the orientation using the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel as described on this link http://kingoftweaks.blogspot.com/2013/12/dell-venue-8-pro-miracast-fixed.html. I am running all the updates except the most recent one where a previous poster reported issues with Bluetooth when he loaded it. There are still little glitches every now and then where I have to restart the wifi adapter after I exit a miracast session if I forget to close the "project" function in the devices menu. I don't have any issues with mouse lag or other flaky performance problems. Perhaps your V8P unit is flawed and a return would be in your best interest. For my purposes, this tablet has worked out ok, I like the small form factor and it is a handy secondary computer.

Thanks so much for this link! It does certainly show that Lou is not alone. I'll try the suggestions by the King of Tweaks and report back. Actiontec support did reply and suggest that the device was not capable of miracast. Another firm and solid reason why I wonder why some of these companies even offer tech support options. Took me 3-follow-up emails to an open ticket in their support queue and a phone call to get them to respond, that it's "probably" not supported. It'd be comedic if I didn't care.. heck it's comedic anyway...

Back to pounding on some more sand. It seems to be helping.:emotion-42:
