dell venue 8 7840 power off issue
first of all, i purchased this tablet in january 2015.
i found out this device turns off by itself at 22% battery while using it(about a month ago) and now, it's powering off at 37% over and over. in order to power on, i have to plug in. if not, there is no way to run it.
plus, one of my acquaintance's happened the same issue since used this tablet about six months ago from now on(so he did factory reset, but his is still the same now) i guess this tablet has some technical difficulty.
i'm living in korea and asked for a chat service on the dell official website, but they just gave me an international number. such an irresponsible! it seems not like solving this problem.

Hey guys I have this same tablet, using it only as screen for drone remote. Shut down all unnecessary services. No apps installed, except for DJI GO4. It shuts down only after 10-15 min, even though it is being charged from remote itself.
Did anybody come up with solution? Will replacing the battery help?

My tablet used to have this battery issue, BUT NOT ANYMORE. Mine died at 43%. So, I decided to let the battery drain its power by leaving the tablet untouched. In my case, it took me at least 2 months until The tablet was unable to power on at all. Then charged it without turning it on for 4-5 hours. Thank God, it is back to normal condition. It has been 2 months without any problem. Hope this will work on other tablets with same issue

Another me too reply. My Venue 8 7000 now powers off with about 40% charge remaining. I completed a factory reset but that did not solve the issue. Neither did wiping the cache. "My Dell" app reports the battery operational, even though it is clearly not. I bought the tablet in 2015, so the lithium ion battery should not be as bad as it is right now, unless it's defective. Maybe a recall is in order. Anyway, seems like Dell is not going to solve the issue anytime soon, so my options are: 1) Get a new tablet 2) Replace the battery myself. I have seen some guides on how to do this, and it appears that both the screen and battery are glued to the system, so it is not an easy task. Plus, the battery prices range from $35 to $50 and I'm not sure about the quality of these OEM replacements. So maybe those $50 better serve me in getting a new tablet. I would love to hear from anybody who has replaced the battery and their process/outcome before I make my decision.

I bought the tab in July 15. I have the same issue since last 5 months. It switches off at 45%. Tries fornatting the tab and dell diagnostics but all in vain. Dell does not seem interested even when the issue is so common. I gues they areno more inteested in customer seevice of this product since it has been discontinue. But dell should know that this degrades their image in the eyes of customers like us

Even I have the same issue for the past 4-5months . Bought the tab in July 2015. Mine switches off at 45%. Tried formatting and diagnostics. But all in vain. Dell does not seem tobe concerned even when this issue is so common. I guess since this tab has been discontinued they have no interest in the service to people who already bought it.

Not sure how many are still following this thread but I found an interesting idea from one responder. They let the battery go completely dead (waiting a couple months) and then charged for 4-5 hours. It seemed to have done the trick and haven't seen any follow up since. I'm in the process of trying this and am wondering if there is any accelerated process in draining the battery quickly and completely? This WAS a sweet tablet and I hate to just toss it but it's not worth saving if it's not going to work. I'm not going to sell it to anyone else so they have the headache either. I wish Dell would have the same integrity.

Is your 7840 still hanging in there after your fix? The same problem just happened to mine so I'm in the process of following your suggestion. Keeping my fingers crossed. I probably won't be purchasing any more Dell products.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, there is a way to accelerate battery discharge. Boot the Venue into Recovery Mode as described earlier in this thread by princetyson (see below) but instead of clearing cache, select View log files and open one of them and then wait a few hours. Since the main Android OS is not running, along with it the program that shuts down the device when it thinks the battery is low is also not running. The Venue will draw the battery down to 0%.
Now, plug in a charger and restart. The Venue will report that the battery is at 0% and the battery monitoring subsystem will recalibrate.
I did this a few days ago and so far, so good.
I think it is also a good idea to "Clear Cache" as described below as well. That seems to have eliminated frequent sluggishness when browsing on my Venue.
Here are those instructions again:
1. If your device is on, turn it off.
2. Press & hold the Volume down button. While holding Volume down, press & hold the Power button until the device turns on. You'll see the word "Start" with an arrow around it .
3. Press the Volume down button until you highlight "Recovery mode."
4. Press the Power button to start recovery mode. You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
5. Press & hold the Power button. While holding Power, press the Volume up button once. Then release Power.
6. Press the Volume down button until you highlight "Wipe cache partition," and then press the Power button to select it.
7. Press the Volume down button until you highlight “Yes,” and then press the Power button to select it.
8. Wait until the cache is wiped. You’ll see the words, “Cache wipe complete.”
9. Press the Power button to restart your device.

Seems to work. No sudden shut downs anymore, and realistic battery percentages displayed. Thanks.

Thanks BobH! Wish I had found this much earlier. Somewhere just after the warranty was done the battery issues started with shutting down at 57%. A few weeks ago fully loaded to "shutting down" in a few minutes youtube. Then I found this and it solved everything back to original. The battery can be used now from 100% to zero.

Well, not a 100% fix as it seems. The venue was shutting down again on some unexpected moments. But now around 40% battery.
I'll see how long the next fix will last.
