Access files from proxy nas
Hello Members,
I am guessing I missed something in terms of replication, and accessing files from a NAS proxy on the destination Unity. I have two Unity 480Fs, running OE 5.0. I thought that if I created a proxy nas on the destination server (along with the svc_nas commands) I would be able to see the SMB share and its files. I cannont.
When I access the proxy nas I see some snapshots (that I cannot access) and a folder for the file system.
I do not see the SMB share that resides on the file system, which resides on the NAS server, which the proxy nas points too. At one time I thought I could see the files in the SMB share with this mechanism.
If I attach to the source NAS, I can see snapshots and the files. I am using the SMB share for Veeam Backup and Replication backup file storage.
The proxy_share and snapshot feature fails.
My concept of replicattion (which may be wrong) is that on the source NAS - I have files in an SMB share. Then the source NAS is replicated to the destination. If something happens to the source, the the files are supposed to be available on the destination - is this correct? If the answer is yes, how can I access the files on the destination?
Thanks so much,
eholz1

Hello Sam-L,
Thanks for the documentation - it was of no help. I have reviewed all of those documents.
I have a source Unity 480F A. I have a destination Unity 480F, B.
I have a nas server configured on A.
I have asynch replication running from A to B.. On Unity B I see the replicated NAS server and its file system.
I have configured a proxy NAS server on Unity B - including running the svc_nas commands to add the proxy.
I can acces the proxy server from a windows computer - I can see some snapshots, and I can see the replicated file system from Unity A.
I cannot see the smb share that I configured as part of the NAS server created on Unity A.
My question is "Can I access the smb share and its files using the proxy nas server on Unity B?"
The smb share contains virtual machine backup files. In a DR scnario we want to be able to copy the files in the smb share to the "new" Unity - depending on the scale of the disaster.
We do not what to do a failover - or to test a fail over with sync - or is this the only way that replication works?
thanks,
eholz1

Hello eholz1,
Have you look at Dell EMC Unity Replication Technologies & look at page 68 about Proxy nas servers? https://dell.to/3suSoHf

Hello Dell-Sam L,
I think I have seen this, but I will review it VERY carefully to
make sure my environment and configuration is correct according to this document.
Thank you very much,

Unlike an actual failover the proxy NAS server feature doesnt create the same shares on the proxy NAS
It offers two types of access:
by default it shows you all file systems and snapshots within a single readonly share that has the name of the NAS server
This was implemented to allow a single proxy NAS to be used to access multiple dst NAS servers
If you want have specific access to a particular location you can use the -create of option of svc_nas to create an extra share there
Note that these shares wont be shown in the GUI or uemcli

I just realized that the Unity replication white paper only mentions the first part of the proxy NAS feature introduced in Unity OE 4.3 that provides a single readonly but not the second part from Unity OE 4.5 that allows read-write access and custom shares.
I am working on getting the white paper updated for the next version.
In the meantime you can see the usage in the Unity service command manual
Basically there is a new -proxy_share option like this:
svc_nas
-proxy_share
| -show
| -add -share -path [-ca] [-pe] [-abe]
| -remove -share
