Unitiy beginner with some basic questions

Hi everyone

I would like to know more about EMC Unity systems. Based on my chats with EMC it is de successor of the EMC VNX systems and is available as ALL FLASH ARRAY and HYBRID.

But so far that's it. We do have a project now with 2 EMC UNITY systems and I have to install them because I am the EMC guy (yay.....) what I've done so far is EMC Datadomain and EMC VNX 1 and VNX 2 but no unity.

Is there a  big difference between VNX and Unity? Is the software and hardware part more ore less the same (Fast Cache, Fast VP, Power Suppplies, batteries etc.) or is tottally different?

How do I setup a EMC Unity? Tools? How do I upload licenses USM??? I would be happy if you can share some basic steps and documents and tell me where to find them.

Cheers

I don't think we can answer all your questions here.

The answers will be different depending on who you ask. There are similarities, but also massive differences.

It would be a mistake to treat this as a similar product as some basic assumptions could cause some trouble.

For now you can start with the info hubs and Unity pages:

Unity

Unity All-Flash & Hybrid Info Hub

Hardware Components – Unity Info Hub

If you will be deploying Unity arrays, I think you should undergo proper Unity specific training before you start.

Hi Duker,

Unity is not fully a successor to VNX but some sectors it will compete depending upon customers requirement.

Technology wise it is lot different (from management, functions) though it is aimed towards "Simplicity".

If you have bought this array (or want to play with Unity VSA Free Community Edition), refer the documents quoted by Andre. Otherwise, talk to your local EMC rep for more info/demo.

It is similar to VNX and VNXe but there changes in Tools and Management.

If you are planning to install Unity professionally I would suggest to spend a bit more time than a forum post.

For partners there eight Unity online trainings available covering Installation, fundamentals, hardware, ....

It also wouldnt hurt to look at the Unity docs on support.emc.com for a start.

Just select Unity on support by product and get all the manuals and white papers

If you want to learn the Administration before having access to a physical Unity sytem there is both a Unity GUI demo and a full virtual Unity VSA available.
