Unity 300 configuration?
Hi folks
I have a Unity 300 NAS that I have some configuration questions about.
My Unity 300 is configured as a NAS server for file system operations (NFS, SMB). Currently SPA is the owner of the NAS and has been assigned an IP. An IO board (4 GigE ETHERNET ports) is also included and they are know as SPA-0, SPA-1 and SPA-2 and each are IP'd as well.
In the above configuration SPA is the primary and SPB is a hot standby. Should SPA fail, SPB and the IO Ports associated with it (SPB-0, SPB-1 and SPB-2) will take over as the primary. The IP addresses assigned to SPA et'al will fail over to SPB et'al. Is this a correct assumption?
If the above is correct and SPA and the associated IO ports are Primary, will there ever be any network activity from SPB and the associated IO ports? The reason for my question is my network folks are pushing back at this configuration. They do not want to connect/activate ports with no IP address assigned to them (i.e. SPB et'al connected as a stand by). They will accept the above configuration if the SPB et'al connections are disabled on the switch. If so, would that have any effect on SPA et'al? With the switch configured in that fashion, a fail over to SPB would not be complete until the ports are activated on the switch and the system is online again.
Is there a better way to configure the Unity 300?
Am I over thinking this (wouln't be the first time)?
Thanks for your advice
-LB

correct - if you only have one NAS server
The better way to use the full performance and availability of the system is to create at least two NAS servers - one on each SP
I wouldnt recommend to disable the ports for SPB - if you have a HW/SW problem with SPB then you would need to manually enable the ports on the switch. A health check that needs to be done before an upgrade probably also fails.
I you just want to network folks to comply you can just create a NAS server in SPB so that its ports also have an IP - you dont have to necessarily use it :-)
