Unity XT X80F - Data Reduction Ratio
Hi All,
Nice to meet you ..
I'm need discussion with detail :
# Introduction
on the unity xt x80f models series, we see the capabilities
- Data Reduction Ratio (DRR) 3:1
- Inline efficiency
we have also checked in the portfolio, sizer and ALL-FLASH DATA REDUCTION GUARANTEE program, that this DRR can be used properly
# Question
- when we do sizing, with BLOCK and FILE requirements, can we refer to effective capacity ? not usable capacity, because we have done sizing with DRR capability and we don't plan to use VVOLs
because DRR VVOLs are not supported in Unity
- we also received information that unity is not always-on DRR, which means that DRR must be set manually, not active by default, is it like this, we still refer to usable capacity?
or stick to effective capacity, assuming DRR must be enabled at the beginning of the configuration
thank you

Hi @DELL-Sam L
Thanks for your info,
Please correct my assumption and my question
# My Assumption
is DRR only activated at the volume or LUNs level ? not pool level
in guide "but it is important to remember that data reduction is not appropriate for all volumes or LUNs"
does it mean that DRR in unity has limitations, where DRR cannot be activated on all volumes or LUNs ?
and not all files can be compressed, for example ISO files, because ISO files are already in compressed form
therefore, the DRR in Unity is not native like the DRR powerstore, it is only a feature to optimize or save storage space at no additional cost.
and when sizing or determining the capacity at the beginning, we must refer to usable capacity, not effective capacity
# My Question
- when we do sizing, with BLOCK and FILE requirements, can we refer to effective capacity ? not usable capacity, because we have done sizing with DRR capability and we don't plan to use VVOLs
because DRR VVOLs are not supported in Unity
you can't refer to effective capacity when determining capacity at the beginning, you have to refer to usable capacity, because DRR in unity is a feature, not native like powerstore
- we also received information that unity is not always-on DRR, which means that DRR must be set manually, not active by default, is it like this, we still refer to usable capacity?
or stick to effective capacity, assuming DRR must be enabled at the beginning of the configuration
Yes, that's right, as already informed, DRR in Unity is a feature, so it's not always always-on or native like Powerstore. you have to refer to usable capacity
Thanks,

Hello IbnuR,
Question: is DRR only activated at the volume or LUNs level ? not pool level?
Answer: Data reduction enabled LUNs are also supported within Consistency Groups. A mix of LUNs with and without data reduction enabled can reside within the same Consistency Group. Data reduction enabled File Systems can also reside within a NAS Server with File Systems with data reduction disabled.
