virtual unity machine in read only mode after getting to the 24gb free space limit.
My virtual Unity VSA machine has gone into read only mode and wont let me delete anything. Seems there is a threshold of 24gb of free space and it now has gone into a self protection mode.
How can i get this thing responsive again so i can use it. Its only hosting a small nfs share at the moment.
Its hosted on vmware and my first thought would be just to increase the drive in vmware and then try to locate a spot to expand it to use that space in unisphere. I guess i dont know if that will work or only cause more problems.

i guess im asking how to expand it? DO i just need to increase the size of the vmdk in vmware and then somewhow expand the pool in the unity device itself?

Hi,
Expand both the vmdk and the pool. Page 16 https://dell.to/3LnDUmI shows how to expand the pool.

Hi,
https://dell.to/3MFQjTj After expanding your vmdk did you also expand the pool and file system?
Let us know if you have any additional questions.

So it cant be done without adding more vmdk virtual disks? The document makes no mention of how to add space to the existing disk. IT seems to suggest indirectly that you need to create a new vmdk and then use that to expand the existing one. It isnt clear i guess. One post here says expand the vmdk and another shows a random pdf that suggests to add more vmdk hard drives to expand. I just need to get this thing out of read only mode so i can get my data cleaned up Seems overly complicated.

You should be able to expand the vmdk. https://dell.to/3vnyh2i In addition phone support has some additional commands that they can do through a remote session that may be able to get it out of read only mode without expanding.

They were the ones that directed me to the community forums for an answer. Said we dont get support on the virutal edition.....despite having other emc arrays with support contracts. I guess i will give the vmdk expanding a shot.

Did you try to expand the vmdk?

no...i havent found any emc/unity documentation showing that it is possible. I have expanded windows and linux based vms but never a vendor appliance under emc. If i could just get my data unlocked so i can could this thing up i would be all set. Had we known this was going to prevent us from using it at 80% or whatever the threshold is, i dont think we would have deployed it in the first place.

Oh, I thought it was a data vmdk and not a vmdk for the appliance. The 5 default vmdks shouldn’t be expanded. The recommended configuration is the data vmdks are on a different datastore using different drives than the appliance. https://dell.to/3wiWKWW Creating a new appliance and copying the data to a separate vmdk then deleting this one should work.

the appliance isnt a vmdk. That doent make sense. Its a vitual unity deployed in vmware via the ova from the Dell/EMC website. The error is it has less than 24gb of free space and that has locked all of our data into read only mode for some reason. I need it unlocked so i can clean it up. IF they only way to unlock it is to somehow add space, how is that done? Do i add space to the existing vmdk and then somehow expand the drive inside the web ui to get it unlocked or do i add another virtual disk (vmdk) to the appliance and then apply that to my disk pool somehow so it will unlock my data so i can clean it up?
I cant just move all the data to a new appliance and redeploy as it is connected to ~30 vmware hosts at the moment and used for deployments. It houses a lot of our shared ISOs and other items we use when deploying vms and such. I just need to get the lock on the data turned off so i can delete some data.

IT does appear that the OVA that was deployed deployed with 4 disks....not 5.

Hi,
You should be able to create a new vmdk and add it to the pool to expand the storage.

These sound promising. Will adding another vmdk in this way and then adding that to the pool take the ready only flag off the data on the current disk? That is what i am after.

I believe so but it isn’t documented so I can’t say 100%.
