How many splits in total across a VMAX array can be created?

We would like to know how many hyper splits can be created across an entire VMAX array.

Edit: We have recently installed the 5875 code to increase the limit to the number of "splits" per physical disk spindle, which was 512. Sorry for forgetting to add that. Also, our Open Systems and Mainframe environments share the same VMAX, but do not share the same physical disks (at least not on purpose). We have a mix of RAIDs: 1, 5 (3+1, 7+1) and 6 (6+2, 14+2) spread across a mix of FC, SATA and SSD disks.

We understand that creating larger hypers is better but we were told that there is a limit to the number of LUN "splits" on a VMAX. In this case, "splits" was said in the context of the RAID splits for the LUNs across the physical disk spindles. This is the number that we are trying to corroborate for a fully-configured, maximum engine VMAX (which we do not have, yet).

Split Operation can be performed by RDF Group

symrdf -g xxxx split

if you are interested you can split individual Devices as well

symrdf -g xxxx split DEV001,DEV002, xxxxxx

Each DA has a limit of 8k targets, AFAIK.

However the overall system performance will be better with fewer larger hypers.   And the system will be easier to mananage.

If you are going with VP (thin) then the hypers or splits can be really large and the devices presented to the host can be small.

The maximum number of accessible logical devices per Symmetrix array is 64,000 for systems running Enginuity 5874
