Configuring VNX5300 VTLU with TSM

Hello. I have an EMC  VNX5300. We have a few NAS CIFS and NFS shares. I backup them through NDMP to a TSM server on a physical library. I have a Quantum iscalar 80 robotics. everything works fine. I would like to use the VNX5300 embedded VTLU in the same manner. I defined the library as a vtl one. I used the example for TSM in page 20 of the Configuring NDMP Backup On Disk on VNX 7.1. I have an issue when I create a path to the libray with the command : define path VNX1 TESTLIB srctype=datamover desttype=library device=c0t0l0. The error message is : ANR8418E DEFINE PATH: An I/O error occurred while accessing library TESTLIB. When I use a false device name, I have this error message : ANR1737E DEFINE PATH: Device name c0t0l1 specified is invalid.I suppose the the TSM server communicates well with the NDMP server but cannot manage it. Has anyone an idea how to resolve this problem ? If this is a driver problem, can I emulate my physical robotics in the embedded VNX VTLU ? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

i have not configured VTLU with TSM, has VTLU been presented to your datamovers so you can get the device names ?

server_devconfig server_2 -list -scsi -nondisks -all

Hello. For the moment it's just a test. We are planning to have a remote datacenter with the same VNX5300. The goal is to backup through NDMP all the shares to that datacenter.

Are you sure the VNX VTLU is what you want ?

It doesn’t have any relation to your physical library

Server_devconfig will only show physical tape drives – not virtual ones

See the NDMP2D manual

does it make sense to keep your primary data and backup data on the same piece of hardware ?

how do you display virtual tapes, in TSM i have to define paths to drives

[nasadmin@vnx1 ~]$ server_vtlu server_2 -tlu -list
server_2 :
id    vendor     product    revision   serial_number     device_name
4     ATL         p1000      1.01         IhbVsML2k5       c0t0l0

I used the device name c0t0l0 listed above in my definition of the TSM library.

Since this is an EMC forum, I modify a bit my question : is it possible to emulate a Quantum Scalar i80 with an HP Ultirum drives with the VNX5300 VTLU ? Is there a list of all the products that could be emulated in the VNX5300 VTLU (matrix document) ?

Remember – this is NOT a Fibre-Channel or SCSI library emulation – it is purely NDMP over IP

Yes, you can name your drive whatever you like – it doesn’t really matter.

You wont be doing any SCSI ioctls to it

Nor do things like block size matter like they do with physical tape drives

All that matters is the tape size.
