Hi Neils,

Thanks for vistin EMC Communities. I've moved your question to our Open Exchange CLARiiON forum in the hopes that it will get the most appropriate attention.

Niels,

do you have information on what IP addresses were assigned to storage processors on this FC4700 ?

I think I can get the IP addresses when I put the clariion in a network. I have the addresses also here on a paper. But they don't help because the clariion is not in any network. My question is: Could I connect the switch in a normal fibre network or do I need a pc before that?

you can connect it to your fibre channel switch but in order to manage the unit you need to be able to connect to storage processors via ip network to bring up Navisphere Manager.

Hi Niels,

Your situation is quite similar to what I had some times back when I bought my own FC4700. Of course these devices are not supported anymore due to their end of life (EOL) cycle and it is very difficult to get good documentaiton for them within the public space. Unfortunately EMC Power Link website seems to be available only for subscribers so you may not be able to get the basic PDF documents from there however I managed to collect various details through the Dell's website, thus the FC4700 storage devices were sold primarily via OEM channels (at least by my best knowledge).

I guess you got the device with the purpose of testing SAN functions or building a test-lab so I suppose you wouldn't fear losing any data that may exist on the storage at this time. My best advice to you is that you apply the complete reset procedure which would involve configuration of its basic parameters from scratch. For this to happen you would definitely need an external PC with serial cable connected to the storage processor.Reseting the device consist from nothing more than destroying the already allocated RAID array on the first few drives where the vital FC4700 configuration data is held. The configuration data consist from LUN allocation / assignments, IP parameters, storage groups, credentials, etc.

Once the stages of initial configuration are reached, you need to connect the serial cable (provided with the device itself) between an external PC (can be either desktop or laptop) and either of the storage processor units (I assume you have two of them). When the physical link is made, you should create a new direct-connection through the serial port which in case of a Windows OS would mean to go through the "Start" button -> "Settings" -> "Network Connections" -> "New Connection (Wizzard)" -> "Advanced Connection" -> "Connect directly to another PC". (This vary for the different versions of Windows). Make sure that the connection is made as 115200 bps speed, otherwise it may not work. Use clariion / clariion! for user name and password.

Once the connection with the storage processor is made you should have 192.168.1.2 IP address assigned on the PC where the sotrage processor should be answering on the 192.168.1.1 address. Keep in mind that these IP's are relevant only to the direct serial connection while it's still alive, so we are not talking about addresses available over the regular LAN connection. When the serial connection between the PC and FC4700 is made, simply open your web browser and go to the http://192.168.1.1/setup address which will provide you with the first set of configuration options for the FC4700 system. Make sure that you assign IP address to it so that you can access it directly over the LAN at a later stage.

Keep in mind that the reset procedure for your FC4700 might be mandatory in case it was assigned with non-standard EMC passwords. In this case your only option is to use the direct serial connection which where you must use the clariion / clariion! credentials. At least that's what worked for me...

So that's it for the first stage. Let me know if I can be of further help to you. I'm not an EMC guru by any means but I spend fair amount of time on discovering the possibilities of the FC4700 beauty .

Cheers & Happy New Year !!!
