VNX support NDMP. Assuming you have NDMP licensed for NetBackup it works quite well. The VNX NAS datamovers have dedicated Fiber Ports for connecting to a Tape Library or VTL, or you can use 3-way NDMP over Ethernet. I’ve actually done both with NetBackup in the past.
There is a Document on PowerLink which describes the configuration of NDMP on VNX and has appendices for the specific configuration required within various backup applications including NetBackup.
The main thing you have to do for NDMP is configure the username/password in the datamover and then connect to one of the datamover IP addresses (either a dedicated IP or a CIFS/NFS server IP hosted by the NAS) and configure the matching username/password in NBU.
Look for “Configuring NDMP Backups on VNX” under the following location on PowerLink..
Home > Support NULL&internalId=0b01406680024e1b> > Technical Documentation and Advisories NULL&internalId=0b01406680024e23> > Hardware/Platforms Documentation NULL&internalId=0b01406680024e24> > VNX Series NULL&internalId=0b014066805632c8> > Installation/Configuration
Dynamox is correct, NDMP backups would need to be restored back to the same NAS platform it was backed up from. I took the comment of “Outside the VNX Ecosystem” to mean that the backups themselves cannot be stored on the VNX.
Your other option is to mount the CIFS or NFS filesystems onto a Netbackup Media server and back them up as a filesystem.
NDMP Backups are less resource intensive, create more accurate backups, and are much faster.
one thing to note is that if you use NDMP, that data can only be restored on Celerra ..it can not be restored to any other platform. If you need to be able to restore data outside of " EMC VNX ecosystem" , you can back it up as a regular CIFS/NFS share.
Hello guys, I'm some what new to VNX, I´m trying to backup CIFS to NetBackup 7.5.03 . I have NDMP licensed for NetBackup and I understand all the steps perfectly I just have one doubt: in one of the steps to configure the NDMP server is says that I have to setup a user name and a password for the data mover, my VNX has been on production for the past 2 years so if i set up the user and pass for the data mover will i loose any Access to the shares that are working right now?
