Question about UltraFlex I/O module
Hi sir,
I am interesting VNX series, according to SPEC, I saw that VNX5100 have zero(0) ultraflex io modules, but I am not quite understand what the ultraflex module is? So I surveyed internet and found EMC provided two kinds of ultraflex io module, one is for Fiber Channel, another is for iSCSI, so my question is:
1. Can I switch FC or iSCSI card from ultraflex module? Or the card in the module is fixed and can't be changed?
2. Except the FC and iSCSI modules, is there any other type or function provided by ultraflex module? For example, is there any ultraflex module can support to extend HDDs for VNX system internal uses such as JBOD or something like that, to increase VNX local storage size.
3. Is there any plan by EMC to develop more ultraflex module with different functions? What kind of function is planned to have in future?
Thanks,
Jacky Lee

Hi,
VNX 5100 do support only FC type host connectivity.
1. Since there is no support for other protocols on VNX 5100, you cannot change the Module or add the Module.
2. Ultraflex Module are available for FC, iSCSI and FCoE
3. There is no such plans by EMC to develop more ultraflex module with different functions
You may refer, Introduction to VNX for more information

Refer Page 63 for different Model of VNX comparision.

Just to add to Madhu's comments. Your questions reminded me about a video from a Chad's World episode where they take a moment to describe the hardware you are inquiring about (starting at marker 5:25).
Then they actually give us a sneak peak (as presented at EMC World) of some early future prototypes of this modular technology which we can look forward to which answers your last question (marker: 16:21). These "Next Gen SLIC's" include: 40GbE, 56Gb IB, another pair where Wade asks: "What are these without ports?", and finally the "Server-on-a-SLIC" with the tentacles hanging off the back of it.
