I like this idea. I didn't realize that moving a CIFS server from the physical data mover to a VDM could be a relatively simple process.
Is KB 000306562 - "How to move a CIFS server from a physical Data Mover to a Virtual Data Mover (VDM)" the article you were referencing? If so, is there an easy way to know if a server is a "compname"?

sure you can but you loose your NFS and CIFS config - like shares, CIFS server, ... and need to recreate them on the dst PDM
Better option would be to move the file systems to a VDM on the src and then replicate both
There is a procedure in the knowledgebase to do move a CIFS server from PDM to VDM which keeps CIFS shares, localgroups, ...
the NFS shares you can simply recreate

I think server_cifs output should tell you
If not I would suggest to open a service request
