VNX Snapshot Physical and Virtual Server question

Hi,

I currently have an application that runs on Solaris 10 SPARC.  This application does a disk backup every night.  The backup is stored on a VNX LUN that's mounted to the physical Solaris server.  The only physical server I have is the Solaris, everything else is virtual and I use Veeam for my backups.

I am trying to find a way to use Veeam to backup my Solaris backup LUN.  I was wondering if it is possible to do a snapshot of the LUN and attach the snapshot to a Linux VM that could be then backed up and replicated offsite using Veeam.  I know the VNX has the capability of using Snapshot Mount Points but I am not sure exactly how it works or if it can accomplish what I'm suggesting.

Other ideas are welcome.

Hi

I assume you mean VNX block with FC/FCoE or ISCSI

Yes you can create per-LUN snapshots there and make them available to another host.

I assume here that you are using VNX block pools – for that VNX snaphots can be used (not the older SnapView)

Of course this backup host will have to be able to understand the file system layout.

If you are using Solaris fs then I don’t think a Linux VM can mount that – but a Solaris VM should be able to.

See the VNX snapshots white paper for details.

You could automate that via navicli or SnapCLI

Hey Rainer,

You are absolutely right.  VNX block FC using VNX block pools.

Can the mount point be permanently mounted to the Linux/Solaris VM to use it with Veeam?

i am sure you will want to "recreate" your snapshot every day right ? You will need to unmount file system in your VM, detach snapshot from SMP, create new VNX snapshots and attach it back to SMP.

Dynamox,

Can all that be scripted?  Do you foresee any issues with what I am trying to do?
