if you can help it, try to always expand SAS tier in 5 drive increments. So can you expand the pool by 5 drives and then use LUN Migrator to migrate LUNs from other raid groups to storage pool LUNs. Once the other raid groups are free ..add the remaining 15 drives to the pool.
aim to "pool" resources together instead of creating isolated islands. How is the pool currently configured (type of drives, number of drives). Same question for the raid group.
We have 3 Raid Groups all Raid 5 all SAS drives. Two of the Raid Groups have 9 disks each and the last Raid Group has 4 disks. The Storage Pool is made up of 5 SAS drives and 8 NL SAS drives. The SAS are in a Raid 5 (4+1) and the NL SAS are in Raid 6 (6+2). Thanks!
Thanks dynamox. My complication is I need to add the first Raid Group to the Storage Pool so I have enough space to migrate the data from the next Raid Group to the Storage Pool and so on. So basically need to add 9 SAS disks at a time to the Storage Pool. Would I initially add only 5 disks so it would create a 4+1 Raid 5?
The SAS drives in the Raid Groups are all 600gb and the SAS drives in the current Storage Pool are also 600gb and the NL SAS in the Storage Pool is 2 tb.
that's good. I would take 20 out of those 22 SAS drive and add them to the pool (internally they will be carved out into 4 x 4+1 raid-5 groups, so you are maintaining best practices). That will leave you with 2 extra drives for hot spares or a raid-1 raid group for some scratch space. Before you proceed with this project, make sure to upgrade to Block OE 32, or the latest version of Block OE (right now target code is 05.32.000.5.216).
