Bad Image.....Dll.....not a valid windows image

Has anyone every had the following message:

xpcom event receiver, bad image

DLL (varies depending on what I try to open) not a valid windows image.

Im able to connect to my internet service provider but when I go to my search engine (internet explorer) no site can be opened.  It just gets stuck.  I was told that this is due to a software problem but Im not sure exactly what the problem is or how to fix it.  I tried to install another serach engine (fire fox) but when I tried to install it, I got the same "bad image" message and I cant even open it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I cant afford the 99$ for software assisence from dell.

While this could be virus related I woudl think that the best course of action would be to do a windows repair first. In order to do that put the windows reinstallation cd in the top most drive of the computer and restart it. When you see the Dell logo or a dell screen tap f12 a couple of times. Eventually you will see a boot Device menu. Within that menu there will be some reference to the cd. Pick that option and hit enter when you see a message to 'press any key' after that follow these instructions http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm. If that does not help i would think that the problem is viral and try running some scans with McAfee or Norton.
