COMODO FIREWALL V3 RELEASED

This is not just a bidirectional firewall, but features:

- Windows XP/Vista 32 and 64 bit OS support.

- Clean PC Mode:
" ... any new application trying to gain access to a computer will be denied access to the PC unless the user expressly permits it since it is assumed to be potentially unsafe. This feature prevents most types of malware and rootkits from getting installed and keeps a new PC virus and malware free."

- Defense+ Host Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS):
" ... helps to secure desktops and servers against rootkits, inter-process memory injections, key-loggers and more. Leveraging Comodo's safe-list database of nearly 1,000,000 trusted executable files, Defense+ can block malware and viruses before they ever get a chance to install on your system."

- Training Mode:
" ... By selecting 'Train with Safe Mode', the firewall will learn how your trusted applications work and silently create rules for them."

- Application Recognition Database:
" ...  now includes a proprietary and continually updated white list of nearly 1,000,000 safe executables. The integrity of every executable is checked against this database to determine whether or not it is genuine before it allows it installation rights."
-------------------------------------------------

Preliminary observations:

- This is a 31 Mb download of a vastly changed firewall. Because it is so different from the previous version, I chose to uninstall the old and do a clean install, which went smoothly.
- Be prepared for a barrage of informational and permission alerts. And not just for programs accessing the internet, but for just about every app you open. (Perhaps I set my security parameters too high).
- So far, I have seen no conflicts with any of my other defensive apps (resident, on-demand, or on-line).
- Very low memory/CPU usage (averages 5-20 MB RAM).

So far I'm very impressed. But times are early, and I will update this as necessary, if I encounter any problems.

Thanks Joe

I have the previous version on my back up computer and it seems to work well, and the only thing different I noticed that it is a little much more insistent on "training" than Zone Alarm ever was...seemingly asking permission more than once on several items. I think I will give the new version a try on my main computer and see how well it gets along with the many and various security products I have here. If the program needs a lot of training I think that is a good thing...that it is really clamping down and watching closely on what crosses the threshold.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Joe,

for XP users who'd prefer to hold onto the old version --- which has received many great reviews --- until such time as the new version is fully reviewed (by you, and professionally) [and debugged, if necessary]...
the old version should still continue to run well, i presume?   [of course, it wouldn't have any of the NEW features, but the existing things should still continue to be okay, yes??]
... or should we just take the dive now into v3 ??

EDIT:  I just looked at my comodo firewall, and while it's the older one, version 2.4.18.184,
i just noticed it's also showing comodo certified applications database 3.0 ...
i don't know if that means it's accessing the latest database?  or was it always that way for version 2.4??

Ah, finally, the long awaited firewall has come out. Now I shall download and see how it works myself....

There is certainly no need to rush into updating- CFP v2.4 is still fully supported, and still available for download. (No plans announced yet for how long, but judging by the complaints at Comodo's forum, probably a long while yet).

I'll be interested in Scot Finnie's final review: his initial review of the beta CFP 3.0 is here: http://blog.scotsnewsletter.com/2007/09/ I agree with his installation tips, and observations (so far).

For those wishing to try it out, I can only state what worked for me (might well be overkill):

1) Complete AV and AS scans to ensure no malware
2) Run a Disk Cleanup (either Windows, or via CCleaner) and Defrag
3) Reboot
4) Create a Windows Restore Point (I also backed up my registry with ERUNT, in case of a corrupted System Restore)
5) Go offline, uninstall your current FW, and make sure Windows FW is also disabled in Control Panel>Security Center
6) Disable and/or exit all other resident defenses, including your AV, Windows Defender, BOClean, TeaTimer, WinPatrol, etc etc
7) Install CFP 3.0, and reboot
8) Remember to re-activate all your defenses before going online!

It is fascinating to watch this FW learn and monitor your apps as you use them the first time thereafter. The pop-up alerts come fast and furious, every time you open an app, but providing you tell CFP to remember your permissions, you only have to go through this once for each app (unless you install or delete something). Today I hardly had any at all. What is remarkable is how this FW manges to monitor so much, with such a small footprint.

David: I can't answer your question on the DB version. Sorry!

Joe,

1) for clarity, what is the full version/build number of comodo 3 you've presently downloaded?   and is it classified as final?  Release Candidate?  still Beta?  or what?

2) " but judging by the complaints at Comodo's forum, [support for 2.4 will be around] probably a long while yet".
Can you elaborate any?

Joe...thanks for the installation tips. Just to be safe I downloaded it on my backup computer, just in case, and will install it today after dinner. Hopefully won't fall asleep at the keyboard from eating too much.

I'm very impressed by Comodo Firewall as well, but then again, I don't have as much knowledge as you do, Joe. Although, it takes a long time to load up at start up when I log into my computer, but if it does a great job at protecting my computer, I could care less.

ky331:

To clarify, this  is the final release of the CFP 3.0, not a beta or release candidate. The build I have is 3.0.13.268. The name of the file I downloaded was CFP_Setup_3.0.12.266_XP_Vista_x32.exe (it has already undergone at least one update from within the program itself).

To elaborate on the complaints would take a while- as expected with any new program there are lots of bugs being posted, as well as a lot of questions. You can view them at the Comodo support forums:
http://forums.comodo.com/help_for_v3-b105.0/
http://forums.comodo.com/bug_reports-b106.0/

There are also lots of kudos being posted, and so it's hard to get a sense of just how good or buggy this version is. I haven't had any problems, but I have a default install, and haven't explored or configured the many modules available yet.

All:

This default install included the HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention System) aka Defense+, which is recommended:
"Defense+ can stop malware, viruses, trojans and worms before they ever get a chance to install themselves by blocking  their ability to make changes to your operating system, applications, registry and important system files.  Defense+  locks down malicious programs to the extent that you may not even require a dedicated antivirus solution."

For those wanting a simpler install, you can choose the "Basic Firewall" option:
"This option is recommended if you are not familiar with computers too much or do not want to see frequent alerts from your firewall. It will not activate Defense+ to fight with malware but your computer will still be secured with an industry strength firewall engine."

This basic install might be a good way to go for many.
----------------------------------
Oh yes- and a happy Thanksgiving to all south of the border!

Update:

There have been a lot of serious bugs reported, and I must say I can't recommend anyone get v3 at this time. System slowdowns, problems with connecting to the internet, and problems with email access are the most frequent problems noted.

One common problem I have experienced is firewall crashes when I try to access the help files. If I stay away from these help files, I've otherwise been lucky, and thus will keep this version - for now.

Comodo is promising fixes sometime in the next week. I'm still keen on the concept, but it definitely needs polishing.

Thanks for updates on this product.

I installed last week on my backup (testbed) computer and no apparent problems as of yet. I will more closely monitor my email (MSN Hotmail, don't use Outlook) and see what happens with the help files. Downloaded on my main machine but will wait awhile to see what happens on the test computer before installing here

Also installed on AA-2007 the other one last week and it seems to be working and updating OK.

Joe,
I've actually installed the new Comodo Firewall and have had no problems with it yet. It's a bit slow though, but as for that, no major problems.

EDIT:   After posting this, and then re-reading through this thread, I see that Joe already mentioned much of this in message #9

=====================

An interesting (controversial??) point from Scot Finnie's recent review:

Comodo 3 adds a wrinkle that makes it like two programs [in] one. There’s a much simpler “Basic Firewallinstallation option that eliminates the host-intrusion-prevention system (HIPS). By choosing this option, you disable the malware protection that Comodo offers, but in my tests, the result was a nearly silent well behaved software firewall.

With its “Advancedinstallation option [which is the default] in vogue, Comodo 3 adds the kind of protection used by business-class security products, though it’s probably not for average users... .

I'm assuming that those who have installed/tested comodo 3 are using the Advanced/default version??
