Does anybody know what this SpySweeper Error Message Means?

I am running the current version of Webroot's SpySweeper. I am also running WinXPro SP2. I also use Norton's AV 2004 and Window's Firewall. Whenever I use SpySweeper to check my pc, I get the following Error message under the Results-Sessions Log:

Warning: Failed to read from disk. The request could not be performed because of an I/0 device error. Then "Warning, Failed to Read MFT Entry 65540.

Is anybody familiar with SpySweeper and have a clue as to why I am continuing to get this error message. I uninstalled the program, disconnected my pc from the internet and then turned off my Anti Virus program and such and then did a reinstall. Before the reinstall, I made sure all the files and folders from Webroot's SpySweeper were deleted and I rebooted the pc in between.

SpySweeper will run, and it will catch cookies and notify me if someone is trying to get access to my computer, but this is one problem I can't solve. I have a printer, scanner, monitor, speakers, and the receiver for the wireless mouse/keyboard hooked up to the pc. Could one of these be the problem?
I can't figure it out and I am hoping someone else can. Other than that, I receive no error messages when running SpySweeper. I've checked through the help files that came with the program. I can't find this problem in there.

In Spy Sweeper, go to options, sweep options. What is checked in the first box area?

The first box that is checked under the Sweep Options tab is "Sweep all folders on Selected Drives" and then underneath that, Local Drive C is checked.

There is an option above that, that is unchecked. It says "Only Sweep Folders where threats are known to Reside."

OK, I thought you might be trying to sweep a CD drive with nothing in it.  Why not post your question to Webroot tech support?

You wouldn't happen to know what the webpage for Webroot Tech Support is?

Thanks so much for the link. I submitted my problem to them and I received a ticket number saying that a tech is going to look into the problem. Thanks for the suggestion. Actually I would never have thought of contacting Webroot's tech support, which is the first place I should always go when having problems with software.

I hope they come through with an answer. There is a toll-free number on the second link if you need to call them.  Good luck with this.

I'll give them a few days, maybe even a week to get back in touch with me. But I have a tracking number and I can go to the website anytime and put that number in and it will tell how long before someone has an answer. Right now it says "Open" so it hasn't gotten to a tech yet.

Those links you sent me really came in handy and also helped me solve another problem I've been having with SpySweeper. Ever since I installed the program, when I click on Internet Explorer or any link, it always took a few minutes for the webpage to load. Well, I was looking through some FAQ's and found the answer and what to do about it. And now the webpages load fast again. The support page told exactly what boxes to uncheck and it has no effect on how well SpySweeper works. I'll keep the phone support number on my desk in case I need to call them. Now if I can just figure out why it isn't able to check the entire hard drive I'll be all set.

Sure, here it is. It really makes a big difference because you don't have that long lag time before a webpage loads.

When Spy Sweeper is running why does Internet Explorer take so long to start?

A specific BHO (Browser Helper Object) included in a recent Java platform update installed on your computer may be causing this issue.

This BHO registers itself with your computer almost two hundred times every time Internet Explorer is started. This causes the ActiveX Shield in Spy Sweeper  to perform a check against this BHO multiple times before it can allow IE to load. This behavior is not typical of a BHO.

There are two ways to resolve this issue.

1) Webroot recommends disabling the Java BHO. This resolution will not reduce the level of protection provided to you by Spy Sweeper. Steps to disable the Java BHO are listed below.

1)      Open Spy Sweeper and click Shields on the left hand side of the screen.

2)      Click the ‘Browser Add-ons’ tab near the top of the Spy Sweeper Screen.

3)      Select the option to Edit BHOs used by Internet Explorer.

4)      Clear the checkbox in front of the ‘Java (TM) 2 Platform…"BHO on the list.

5)      Click ‘Yes’ for the question pop-up that Spy Sweeper generates.

6)      Click ‘Save Changes’ in Spy Sweeper.

Note: Once you click ‘Save Changes,’ it can take a few moments for Windows to unload and deactivate this BHO. Please be patient.

There is another option if this one doesn't work, but this option worked really well for me.

Could you please provide the web page link to the speedup (boxes to uncheck) you refer to in your comment above?

I checked this out and I did not have item 4 checked anyway (there was no Java at all in the BHO section) and I never have experienced an IE noticeable delay anyway.  The support item only refers to internet explorer taking a lojng time to start, not on every web page.  But if you had a java box to clear and it now makes everything run faster, I'm delighted to hear it!

Did you check out that entire link? There is another option to try. After I first installed SpySweeper it would take quite a while for my home page and any links and email that contained links to load. Half the time I wasn't sure if the webpage would come up or not. But since I made those slight changes my pc runs just like it did before installing SpySweeper. Hopefully I will get an email back from the company giving me an answer to why I keep getting that error message. I did have a Java 2 Platform listed and that is what I unchecked. I just hope that unchecking that box doesn't cause problems for the other programs. At least one problem solved. Isn't it nice to finally find the answer to something? Let me know if you check out the link and try option number 2.

Webroot did not recommend doing option two so I'm not going to do it and I have no reason to do it as I notice no delays.  They said there was no problem doing what you did though, so you should be good to go.

I received an email from SpySweeper. Basically, they told me to do what I had already tried twice. They suggested that I Uninstall the program, reboot the pc and then reinstall it again. I sent them an email saying that I had already tried it and if they had any more suggestions. The only thing that was different that they suggested was that I download the program from their website instead of using the program disk that I bought. Everything else was the same, including the key code that was enclosed in the email they sent. I really hate to uninstall the program yet again, so I asked them if they had any more solutions. I don't see how downloading the program and running setup would be any different than using the Cd of the program that I bought. Do you?

When you run SpySweeper, do you turn off your anti virus and other memory resident programs? I leave my AV program on because my pc is always hooked up to the internet when I'm doing a SpySweeper scan. Though I suppose I could unplug the cable during a scan.

I didn't want to try option number 2 either, so I'm glad the first one worked. It used to take forever for webpages to come up,  now it's back to normal. But I doubt I would have tried option 2 either. Active X files get me confused and you don't know what ones are the right ones to use because some can contain viruses. Still haven't heard back from SpySweeper, but I'll give them time. I'm sure they must get a ton of email.
