ESET NOD 32 AV/ Comodo Firewall Pro 2.4 -or- ESET Smart Security

Plan to remove my NIS 2005 and go with the ESET. Saw they had a newer version on their website and was wondering if I should go with the ESET Smart security Home version for both firewall and AV protection or go with the recommended ESET 32 AV and Comodo Firewall.

Hi Glenn54:

I can only give my personal opinion that you are smart to abandon NIS. Security suites such as this seldom accomplish all things well, and do tend to be CPU intensive. Far better, IMHO, to pick the best FW and the best AV that works for you.

If cost is not a factor, then I don't think you can do better than Eset's Nod32 for an AV. I recommend version 2.7, which is what I use, even though version 3.0 was recently released. FWIW, I have reservations on upgrading, at least at this time.

As far as a firewall goes, I like and use Comodo 3.0. It is a demanding FW, and not for novices. From my research on Eset's Smart Security, which includes both the AV and the FW, I cannot recommend this at this time. Partly this is due to my bias against suites, and partly due to my perception that Eset's FW  is not the best available.

Thanks for the input Joe53. I'll go with the ESET NOD 32 and Comodo Firewall. I'm also running Webroot Spysweeper. Would my Spysweeper software work in tandom with this AV/Firewall setup? I considered replacing the Spysweeper with Windows Defender that was also rated highly here. -PS- I have an older Dell Demin4300 1.2G proc, 512meg. mem, 48gig hardrive. Running XP.

Glenn54,

I do think ESET has some wonderful and very effective products.

I use the new version of the AV product (NOD32 Version 3) but as JOE53 noted he uses an earlier version namely 2.7.

Both are available but if you are planning to follow Joe's advice make sure you download the 2.7 version. As I recall you may have to look a bit to find the older 2.7 but it is available and is a great product.

Good hunting.

Hmmm. Is there a direct link to the NOD 32 free download? I went to the ESET website and filled out my name and email address and selected the NOD 32 free trail version. I then received a reply email that thanks me for trying their product and  "click here to confirm email address". It then takes me to a page that's suppose to send me to the free trial link, but I'm not able to find anything. I tried copying the URL and wasn't able to reach anything either. Also, from what I can see on their website, only version 3.0 is available.

Glenn54,

From ESET :

To Purchase [AV Product NOD32] - http://www.eset.com/purchase/index.php

To DOWNLOAD [Version 2.7] (ESET will send you two e-mails - one a confirmation and the second username/password) http://www.eset.com/download/registered_software.php

When you get to the download page just look for version 2.7 and you are good to go.

OK, thanks for all the help guys. I uninstalled my old NIS 2005 and installed ESET NOD 32 (decided to opt for the 3.0 version) and for firewall protection, I installed Comodo. Everythings working great, exept for one small problem. My computer won't auto standby after 20 minutes of inactivity. It will go to stanby if I press the power button on my tower though. Any options settings I can tweak to get around this?
